We were looking for a hotel "off the beaten path", and Shep's Miners Inn certainly fit the bill. First of all, you can't beat the price; we paid about $60. The room, or should I say ROOMS were huge, almost the size of my apartment! There were two bedrooms plus a living room with a daybed, so the three of us had plenty of space. The furniture and linens were a bit worn, but everything was perfectly clean. One big caution: THIS PLACE HAS NO AIR CONDITIONING!! This could be a real problem for older travelers, especially during the summer. The owner provided us with several fans, and it was cool enough during the night to sleep comfortably. The restaurant next door was delightful, with live entertainment, good food, and an unbelievable bar. You wouldn't expect a place in the middle of nowhere to stock over 100 kinds of beer plus a selection of fine spirits. Just one of the many pleasant surprises that made Shep's Miners Inn a place we won't forget.

On the route between the Grand Canyon and Death Valley, we visited and stayed in Chloride, Arizona, a historic mining town which is also a semi ghost town. Although there is nothing to do here apart from visit the ghost town village, staying here was a great experience and very unexpected! We stayed at Sheps Miners Inn, the only accommodation in Chloride, next to Yesterdays restaurant. The accommodation is very basic, Indian style but very individual. The restaurant next door is excellent and on the weekends there is a live country singer. The place is very much for locals - we were the only tourists there, but because of that we felt the experience was so much better. Line dancing included!!
