I had a terrible flight coming into South Africa, was very sick, tired and weak. I was only staying the one night here but it was definitely a good one! As soon as I arrived, the man at reception helped as much as possible. He straight away organised me a taxi for the next morning, worked out the timing for... More

While it has been months and, likely, years since its Ritzy days this hostel welcomes you into a safe, well located area of Jo'burg. During my stay it was fairly dead yet reception was still open 24 hours a day for the six? guests. We rarely used the kitchen as there's such yummy, cheap restros near by or their resident... More

This would have to be the most disgusting place I have stayed. Everything felt humid and filthy. There were giant cockroaches in the showers, and you couldn't close bathroom doors properly. The giant roaches followed you into the bedrooms, and weren't afraid to climb over you or into your bags. As soon as the sun was up I got a... More

A little maintenance would have this place at a satisfactory level. eg; broken chairs, tables, power outlets off wall, cracked windows, curtains hanging off rails, smell underneath a sink (couldn't open door as the bed was pushed up against it), GREEN pool, no locks on showers and lock on toilet didn't latch, We were appalled and have recommended the tour... Stayed one night here before we started an overland tour. Pretty disappointed. Transfer from airport was expensive, was noisy at night time, and kitchen was dirty. Staff were "interesting". But it was a safe part of town and convenient as our overland tour left from here. We stayed elsewhere when we returned to Jo-burg and kinda glad we did.

This is definitely a backpacker's scene. We only stayed one night before the start of our overland tour in Southern Africa and what a mistake it was! Lots of partiers stay here and they were drunk and loud all evening. The bathrooms are dirty and not maintained. The hostel seems to be in bed with many of the overland tour... More

A friend of mine & I stayed one night here in May this year. The owners were easy to communicate with - through them, we organized a pickup from the airport & a dropoff at the bus station, and they were reliable. Pickups and dropoffs were right on time. The backpackers is located in a safe little nook in town.... More

I stayed here at the beginning of my South Africa trip and it wasn't the greatest start. After flying almost 24 hours I had to wait a couple of hours for my transfer to pick me up (even though the hostel told me he was already waiting). On getting to the hostel the staff seemed bored and sometimes rude. I... More

I stayed here for four nights before beginning my Acacia tour of Africa, from Johannesburg through to Nairobi. The tour only departed from Johannesburg, it didn't visit the city itself, so if you wanted to explore Johannesburg, you had to book extra days there yourself. The Ritz was an easy choice for me, as it was where our tour departed... More

I stayed in this backpackers twice. The backpackers is not outstanding in terms of design and style, but it has almost everything you need. The dorms are very clean and extremely spacious (I've been travelling since 7 months now and I have never had so much space as here). I stayed also in a private room and also this one... More
