This was my third visit to this beautiful guest house on the Berea. John, Paddy and the staff are so lovely and look after you as soon as you arrive. The house is absolutely charming with the most beautiful big spacious rooms with the most breathtaking views. The garden is a delight and although I often seem to be there... More

We have stayed at many B&B's over the years of travelling and rate Essenwoodhouse as a standout. The setting is in a high end area of Durban. The colonial architectural style of the residence is most welcoming. It is situated on a hillside overlooking the whole City of Durban with a forefront of beatiful landscaping and a gorgeous swimming pool.... More

We had a wonderful two night stay in Essenwood house. The steep driveway going down was a bit intimidating, but then you enter this little spot of heaven. The owners are very helpful, but also give you the privacy you would like. We stayed in a beautiful room on the second floor with our own private entry. The rooms are... More

Thank you so much for taking the time to write about your stay with us. This is always appreciated particularly if you enjoyed what we have to offer together with everything else to see and do in Durban. Most of the year is hot and humid here so anything other than space heaters would be a waste, so I hope... More

We stayed for a week. We could not have received better hospitality from the host. We had a corner room with a deck with fantastic views over Durban. The room was spacious, the bed and bathroom huge, with high quality sheets, etc. The location is perfect- high up on the Berea;and the property is safe, with easy parking. The gardens... More

Thank you so much for your very kind words about your stay with us. I am so glad that you enjoyed your room and everything except the grandfather clock, which i could have switched to "silent" if you had mentioned it as being a bit of a bother.! We are so used to it that don't notice it at all,... More

We stayed at Essenwood while on a business trip to Durban. Our room was spacious with a wonderful balcony overlooking the gardens and pool. The location is great as you are a quick 10 minutes from downtown and secure parking is available. The gardens are a tropical paradise. The breakfeast is fantastic with many choices for a nutritious start to... More

A beautiful old "colonial" property with a charming and helpful owner. A reminder of bygone times of gracious living. All the property is decorated with antique family furniture, photos and silver. You can relax on your own veranda with a stunning view over the bay of Durban (if you are on the first floor) or directly jump into the big... More

Thank you so much for the very nice things you had to say about your stay with us.Most appreciated. I must say, it is very comforting to have all ones "family" possessions around one and even better when our guests recognise them and enjoy what we try and make like an English country house. We hope you got home safely... More

I had a peaceful pleasant stay here. John the owner was very kind and even gave me something free as I did not have breakfast there. Which he didn't have to. They called me a cab whenever I needed and nothing seemed too much for them. I would like to see a bit more hot water for a bath but... More
