Despite the 'Absolute dump' review I stayed at the Parade and experienced it quite differently. Firstly, all accommodation in Durban is expensive and generally of a lower standard than that in other cities in South Africa. The Parade was far cheaper than anything else available, particularly along the seafront. Secondly, the crime rate in Durban is said to be high - which can't be blamed on the hotel - Durban is essentially a third-world city. The bullet-proof glass didn't bother me and the presence of a friendly security guard in the lobby was reassuring. All the lights, including those in the hallways, worked, and I felt perfectly safe in all parts of the hotel. Moreover, we, two women, went out for a meal and a walk along the seafront in the evenings, usually returning around 22.00 when the streets became quieter.
