My wife and I spent 1 night in the Buthelezi Suite, wow, the most beautiful room we have ever stayed in (And we travel extensively). The service at the hotel was out of this world. We had dinner at the Grill Room, outstanding. If you want luxury combined with exceptional service, then try the Oyster Box more

We were delighted when we checked into the Oyster Box as old guests to see it hadn’t changed. Even some of the wonderful old staff were still around. They have really done a great job refurbishing the hotel, and it is still Very colonial. The only down side was that the room we stayed in had a stand in the... more

Our family stayed at the iconic Oyster Box and couple of years ago and were very much looking forward to our trip to sunny Durban and the new and improved hotel. I'm very happy to report that we all had a wonderful time. The complete overhaul has done justice to the picturesque Indian ocean coastline and what's more impressive is... more

We recently stayed at The Oyster Box, a new hotel in Umhlanga. We were amazed at the property and location, very classic and right on the beach. Rooms were smallish, but had fantastic views of the Indian ocean which made up for it. Service and food was incredible with amazing friendly faces all over the hotel. A really great couple... more

i absolutely love this hotel. ive stayed here several times in the last few years while on business in durban and have always enjoyed my stay. Some people may not take to the decor which is at the very shabby end of shabby chic, and reminds me of english seaside hotels as described by Enid Blyton. The rooms are all... more

I'm writing this on the terrace of the Oyster Box. They don't have WiFi but sit at the north end of the bar and you can use the Beverley Hills Hotel's facility! I think this place is wonderful. All the public areas are full of character in an old colonial way. The bedrooms are fine if getting a bit tired,... more

The Oyster Box was recommended to us by friends who had stayed there and whose mother had also stayed there frequently in her youth. The property had been privately owned but sadly has now been bought by a hotel chain. Hopefully the beautiful tiled panels and 40's appearance of the lobby will remain. We had booked an upstairs suite overlooking... more

We booked into the Oyster Box for our annual family holiday. It seemed like the kind of place which manages to blend modern comfort and cuisine with it's distinct colonial heritage. Well, for us, it had this in spades, as well as providing a little extra special character, not to mention the extraordinary location. The staff & management were extremely... more

Food and service were excellent with the hotel's location being the best in Umhlanga. Charming hotel with a great sense of history as it was the first to be built there. The food was also excellent, especially the curry! I would recommend this hotel to anybody whether they are families, single or couples. The only criticism was that some of... more

Lovely old hotel on the beachfront with fantastic views past the lighthouse out to sea and back along coast to Durban. We stayed in a suite on the first floor. Nicely decorated and spotlessly clean. Good sized rooms. We found the staff very friendly. Bar is a delight as is the terrace where buffet breakfast is served overlooking the ocean.... more
