33 South really isn't just a bed for the night. For us it was 120 ZAR/night, but the three of us wanted to share a room so we definitely think we got a good deal. It has all the commodities a back packer would expect from 21st century accommodation: wi-fi, three bathrooms, a fully-fitted kitchen and a newly opened bar. The management employs local staff with a strong knowledge of SA and the local area so you'll be sure to be kept entertained. The rooms are based on themes around South Africa and excitingly decorated accordingly, with more than enough storage space in each.
The service from the always on-hand friendly staff was second-to-none - low cost meals cooked by them were available every evening, and going out with them after their shift in the Observatory area was not uncommon either. The staff work on a trust principle, so after the deposit for the first night is paid everything goes on tab.
