We chose Hotel San Carlos after checking Tripadvisor because it's within easy walking distance of Symphany Hall and costs about half what the chain area hotels cost. We only needed 1 night before moving on elsewhere. This is a good, affordable, safe choice - but know what you're getting. San Carlos is intentionally a 1940's style hotel. The rooms are... More

We stayed here for 2 nights in Jan. while on vacation and were quite pleased overall. Don't be afraid of the negative reviews here; just read up and know what you're getting into. This is a great historic hotel with a wonderful history and a definite charm, but it is not fully renovated and has quirks unique to older buildings.... More

We were in town for the Arizona R&R Marathon. This hotel is centrally located in downtown and the price was decent. And, this attracted some rude customers. There were two disturbances outside our room in the wee hours of the morning and I felt unsafe. Security arrived after the muckrakers left. Not good right before a 26.2 run. The room... More

We had no hot water, the TV was broken, the carpet has never (EVER) been cleaned. The Excercise room consisted of 3 machines, of which one was working. There was nowhere to get coffee before 7am. The manager: ANGELA HENTZ is the rudest person I have ever met. I would not go near this place with a ten foot pole.... More

I had no hot water, the t.v. was broken, it smelled, we could hear the people next door (thin walls), it was sketchy at night, the exercise equipment was also broken, and worst of all the staff was so rude. This hotel charged me for a night's stay that i wasn't there for, and then couldn't reverse the charges and... More

The service at this hotel is mediocre. The staff often seemed tired and uninterested. There also isn't much of a concierge. The room (single queen) was an okay size. The room I stayed in was clean and had an eclectic mix of antique and refurbished furniture. The bathroom was not huge but served its purpose. There was a good size... More

I probably should have asked for a different room. I was in 709. The banging was loud enough to startle me out of a deep sleep. I never figured out what was causing the banging (radiator pipes? elevator?). I had my ipod and resorted to wearing that at night. Otherwise the place was fine. I got a pre-paid good price... More

First off, as other have mentioned, if you want luxury and amenities, stay at the other chain hotels in the area. If you want to relive a little history and don't mind the inconveniences of an old hotel, San Carlos is a gem. Everything you would want from a vintage boutique hotel complete with ghost sightings (2nd and 7th floors!),... More

And I was. It's historic, it has character, it's a little bit funky and full of personality. It's not the Westin, the Wyndham, the Sheraton, or any of other chain hotels in the area, all of which have the same personality (none) but all of which are cleaner, have more amenities, fewer drunks, and less craziness. Me? I liked it,... More

I stayed here because the block rooms were sold out at the designated hotels for our conference. I was glad I found the Hotel San Carlos. This is not your hotel if you want a Hyatt or Westin experience. This is the place for you if you enjoy history and a little of the out of the ordinary. It 's... More
