If theres an award for the worst Hostel in Ireland, the Old Monastery Hostel would be my nominee. I´ve been there some years ago and at that time it had charm and was only a bit filthy. Now, in September in 2009, it was extremely filthy. But the worst was definitely the owner. He was friently until he had pocketed... more

The Old Monastery Hostel in Letterfrack, right next to the entrance to the Commenara National Park, is an ideal affordable spot for people wanting to explore Connemara. The interior is colourful and warm, the facilities (cooking, eating, washing) seemed to suit everybody who was there, so the atmosphere was very welcoming. (An unfortunate plumbing problem meant that we went from... more

Strongly suggest avoiding this hostel- it is filthy. When we complained to the self-styled "serf" he said that "that is part of the charm of the place" but he did bring us to another room where at least the sheets had been changed. One of the other (francophone) guests described it as a "bidonville" (shanty town) and with all the... more

Hi.Sorry it took me a year to write this review, but after seeing some of the comments below, I felt I had to comment on the hostel. I have travelled a lot in Ireland over the last 15 years, and one of the best parts of the trip is staying in the many great hostels in Ireland.I previously stayed in... more

I am Irish and stayed in this hostel on a road trip.i am well travelled and have stayed in many hostels throughout europe. this does not measure up to any hostel i have stayed in. It is unclean, unsafe and a waste of time and money. The bathroom is very dirty and dingy. the rooms are full of cat hair... more

Together with some friends from the Monastery I went on a guided hike today, as there are heritage- weeks & it was all about the village (Letterfrack), the park, the plants & animals living in it.. very interesting. Besides I was told that our hostel is the oldest house in town, builded in 1849 when Mary & James Ellis, a... more

My husband, a friend of ours and I were travelling around Ireland for two weeks. I had heard from a friend of mine that we "HAVE to stay in the Old Monastery" and even a nice Irish-woman in Galway said it is a "special place." That being said, we drove up to a quirky place with junk strewn all around... more

I completely endorse the experience of Despondent and Kolo 80 below. I booked a double room for 2 for the night of Sat, the 3rd of May in the Monastery hostel, Letterfrack, as far back as 18th of March. I specifically told the owner we would be checking in between 7-8pm. He replied by email saying this was no problem.... more

I was hiking in Connemara (Twelve Bens) with 3 other friends. We organized our trip well in advance. One of the planned point was to stay in the Old Monastery hostel. So, I called the manager 4 weeks before our comming and booked a hostel. I said that we might arrive late afternoon because we would be hiking from Ben... more
