Loved the castle cobwebs and all that’s all part of it.. the big fire place in reception was a really needed warm welcome the smell of the wood filtered right up to our room we loved all that... bar food was great and the restaurant food was to die for, loved the duck and the decor was stunning. Staff could... more

This was supposed to be a romantic break Ha!Driving up to the castle we were impressed it is beautiful outside and the entrance stairs and hall are impressive. The staff were friendly but it went downhill from there. Our room was dingy with nauseous wall paper and furniture that some would call quaint but it was ebony antique that had been looked... more

We were only passing through for one night while attending a wedding there, but were hugely taken with its oldfashioned charm and romance. No doubt, some would like a couple of million spent on upgrading the place and adding the almost mandatory spa and swimming pool. The same people might say it's a bit tired in places. But it's friendly,... more

This was our first time ever staying in a castle, not to mention an authentic castle. The castle is complemented by a beautiful stone fireplace in the lobby, and elegant panels of stained glass at the landing of the 2nd floor staircase. Our room was very good size decorated in shades of pale blue and cream reminicent of the period.... more

We had our wedding ceremony and reception here last week and cannot praise Markree, the staff, and the fantastic food highly enough. We had stayed here twice in the past and love the castle. If you want nice, modern rooms, look elsewhere - the rooms are old in style, and some people might think they're a bit tatty, but they're... more

There are some parts of this castle that are quite beautiful... the grounds, the front hall and its massive stained glass window, the dining room. Our guest room was not one of them, though... it was comparable to a Motel 6. A letdown. The service also was spotty. One woman was quite helpful and friendly when we asked for suggestions... more

Markree may be worth touring and walking the grounds but save your Euros and stay somewhere else. We stayed in the "Johnny Cash" room. Let's start with the positive - the dining room is gorgeous, right out of the finest castles of the 18th century; our room and bathroom were HUGE, and the grounds were lovely. But our room at... more

Just back from a great value 2 night B & B and 1 dinner package at Markree. My husband and I were there to celebrate our wedding anniversary. From the minute you enter the castle it is a genuine authentic experience. I can still smell the wonderful fire they have lighting all day in the huge old fireplace in the... more

Excellent value - the furniture was a little worn and dated, but that made the experience all the more authentic. The surrounding gardens were great for walking, but could be a little more maintained. The room was spacious, as well as the bathroom. It was easy to find, but nicely secluded. They were flexible with dinner hours, and you didn't... more

One of my hopes when we went to Ireland was to spend a night in a castle. Most others were very pricey. I found this one, with a great B&B rate, so I booked it. We were completely thrilled with our stay at the castle. Sure, it's a bit shabby. Our bed wasn't the most comfortable thing. But we were... more
