A hotel with character, lovely decor and spacious, though some areas, like the carpets, were a bit grubby. Bedroom was very good. Lovely outdoor pool (there's also an indoor one somewhere). Food was very good - all buffet style, but nothing was labelled, even in Spanish, so a bit difficult to work out some items - important if you have food allergies or preferences.

If you are travelling to or from Morocco or Ronda, Hotel Reina Cristina in Algeciras is an affordable, but beautiful stopover. It's like a Manor House with olde worlde charm. The inside is chic and even though it's old, it is absolutely delightful, classic and historical. Jazz was playing when we arrived so of course I had to buy a glass of wine and relax in a comfy chair. It also has two great swimming pools. Things to see and do in Algeciras: the market place, Plaza Alta, Parc Maria Cristina, and the aqueduct on the edge of town. It's also a quick trip to Gibraltar for the day. I wish we'd stayed longer and taken it more slowly.

On my way from Malaga airport to Algeciras I got a message that due to high winds the boat from Tarifa to Tangier, Morocco was cancelled. A quick search online showed a magnificient old hotel surrounded by a park in the centre of Algeciras. The room with breakfast cost only 57 euros and there was even a small indoor swimming pool, outdoors was still closed. In warmer weather I would have enjoyed my balcony in the evening. It was easy to walk to the port in the morning to change my ticket for a bigger ship to Tangier Med.

Having read the reviews of this hotel, we were a bit concerned about our stay there before we arrived. Glad to say that, despite our apprehension, there were absolutely no problems at all. Indeed on the contrary. The hotel is very noticeable from the road, standing as it does on a rise overlooking Algeciras harbour in its own extensive and very well maintained grounds. From the outside, the hotel is very impressive and reflects the English style of the British who built it and, I think, its sister hotel Reina Victoria in Ronda. The latter has recently been restored and is now owned, I think, by a French hotel chain. Historically the Reina Christina is fascinating, having been the setting for the Algeciras Conference of 1906, a Conference on which a young Winston Churchill reported as a journalist. Our room was immaculately clean, as was the rest of the hotel. Our room was spacious, with its own small balcony and, though some slight repairs were needed, the decor was fresh and pleasant. Staff were extremely pleasant and had obviously been well trained. The carpets in the corridors do need to be changed, however, since they are quite badly stained in many places by what appears to have been spills of bleach. Breakfast, too, was disappointing - too much processed meat and cheese for our taste while the orange juice wasn't freshly squeezed. But at only €9 each it was fair value. All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this delightful, extremely clean and very professionally run hotel which fully merits its four stars.

We spend 3 nights in this hotel. We wanted to visit Gibraltar for 2 days, but staying there was very expensive so this was a cheaper option. By car it took us 30 minutes to drive to the border of Gibraltar. The hotel looked grand from the outside. Like something from a Hollywood movie. The garden also was nice. But there was almost nobody. There were hardly any guests this time of year. It felt we had the hotel for ourselves. We even had to collect the key for the indoor swimmingpool at the reception to open the door. Inside the hotel and the room were not that grand or goodlooking. Especially the carpet looked dirty. Our room was ok, it was spacious but we don't see the 4 stars in it. The hotel is not in town center, it could be walked but the path was dark. We spend one night for dinner in the restaurant and that was the best experience. Just like breakfast the food was very good and the service great. Thanks to Alvaro for the personal touch! We asked for advice at the reception and we got friendly and good advice. A good plus is the free parking for our rental car.

Find another hotel! The staff is rude, they do not have enough staff in restaurant/bar so you have to wait a long time to get a drink. This property is far from any restaurants so you will be at their mercy. If you want to use the safe in the room, they charge you 12 euros and a deposit and it has to be cash. The AC does not work, the light fixtures do not work. It looks pretty but that is about it. There are other hotels in the area if you must stay in Algeciras. STAY AWAY from this hotel!

Pros: Good location, reasonably friendly staff, good breakfast selection, set on a large green space, interior of main building is nice to look at Cons: This place was obviously something special in its heyday but now it's just a filthy, depressing shadow of its former self. In my room, which was by the pool, a combination of poor maintenance and lack of cleaning made the space physically unpleasant to be in. The toilet ran constantly. The shower faucet wouldn't stay in place. There are holes in the tub that were patched but never painted. There is black mold everywhere, as well as other people's hair. The light is cool white and makes the room look industrial. There were bugs squished into the walls, and years of dust built up on the furniture. The grounds are not tidy, the most convenient gate for pedestrians is locked, they charge you a deposit for the privilege of borrowing a beach towel, and the rooms in the 400s are tucked away by the back door where staff clear out bottles and trash after midnight. Maybe the rooms in the main building are nicer, but I wouldn’t bet much on it.

Helpful staff and a spacious pleasant room. Decor is classic - of course that it is abit old fashioned, but that is a charm in itself. Well maintained gardens. Good selection of foods for breakfast. Nightly rate was very reasonable. But - there is a sense of "nickel and diming" with the stupid economies - no soap in the room - some dispensers (2) were provided but neither worked! Give us a cake of soap. The hotel wanted $6 nightly for the use of the safe- yes $6. This nasty chintzy attitude also shows with no bottled water in the room. Management evidently can't understand if this is a grand hotel or an economy joint! Sad reallty!

Elegant hotel of impeccable history. Helpful and friendly staff, charming and historic public rooms, delightful grounds as well as all the facilities one would expect of such a Grande Dame. Rooms spotless albeit a little stark, comfortable beds and delightful verandas. Excellent convivial bar, terrace for a shady evening drink and delicious Iberian ham served with olive oil.

NO WiFi, staff really could not care less, basically they did not want to be there. This hotel may have been 4 star a few years ago but NOT now. The fact that Churchill stayed there does not mean anything, he died in January 1965 so telling people he did means nothing. The room was very very tired. No lift down the multiple stairs for rooms 1 - 11 is not good with cases etc. the carpets are all stained and look awful. The emergency exit signs were not illuminated, just a card stuck on the wall!! A/C did not work properly. The curtains did not cover the patio doors and were partly hanging off the rail, outside the room to the patio was disgraceful. The mirrors in the room were dirty, the fridge was warm all the time, no coffee available until 07:30. The food in the restaurant was not hot, the menu del día for lunch was the same menu in the evening but our chicken was reheated and tough. Nobody asked how the meal was, beer glass was only 2/3 full. it was just a matter of putting the plates in front of us and then walking away. when ordering our meals we were asked what we wanted for dessert. This is the 1st time anywhere in the world we have had to order our dessert when we ordered our starters and main courses. We were also informed we had to pay for our dinner - we knew we had to pay for it, did not need to be reminded, at the end of the awful food we asked if we could have coffee, were told the restaurant does not serve coffee, we have to go to the bar. And this is supposed to be 4*. This hotel has got to be one of the worst we have stayed in. The staff really could not care less. They were totally uninterested in the issues and when we asked when the WiFi would be back on as we had none for the total time during our stay, there was just a shrug of the shoulders, no apology or anything. When we departed we were not asked how our stay was or anything, anyway we said it was awful - reply was “ah OK” so we were booked at the same hotel in 4 weeks time - that has been cancelled and another hotel in the area booked instead, but then they don’t care!!!
