What a lovely place the Bear is. The staff were so polite and helpful. They clearly knew we were guests so none of that annoying chit signing when we ordered lunch at the bar. you'd probably have no expectations of any hotel in Hungerford - atleast I did not - considering the prices (low)... But, alas! Such a great place to stay with friendly staff and I have to mention the fact they serve great food too! more

First impressions were good - the reception and the common areas in the hotel have been tastefully decorated with a contemporary look and were not of the twee country variety. I'am very disappointed to read the above comment, not least because the room had had a full refurbishment only 6 months ago.All our Deluxe rooms vary in size,shape and decor and being an old building sound transference can sometimes be an issue, even though we have tried our best to reduce this as much as possible. Having recently stayed at The Bear, in Bear Island to be exact, that is the rooms towards the back of the car park that seem to be a relatively new feature to the hotel, we were extremely dissapointed with the experience. I'am gratefull to the correspondent for their comment and would respond as follows;Our Bear Island rooms where built in 1989 and do not have the character of the main building dating to 1300...The weekend the guests stayed was very busy and therefore the rate we charged were not heavily discounted, but discounted had been applied as I beleive these guests...
I've stayed at The Bear three times now and each time I've had a different experience. We stayed recently and were upgraded to the Bridal Suite. I'm writing this review because I was really shocked to see the bath hadn't been cleaned (full of hairs) and the shelf next to the tub was dirty with used shampoo bottles sitting on... more
We had a quick stopover (just one night) at the Bear this summer, room was very small but pleasant enough. Stayed in the stable block of rooms rather than the main hotel which backs onto the bar area. Very clean room, free parking, comfy bed, wide choice of food for breakfast and window over looking a steam with ducks swimming... more
