My adult son and I were cycling the Walney to Wear route in early December and spent our second night at the Kirkby Stephen Hostel. Being winter it was almost dark when we arrived at 4pm and the hostel was empty. There was a sign on the door to ring the owner, Denise, who arrived in fairly short order and... More

After a long day of walking on Lady Anne's way, I was happy to find this haven for a good nights rest. I liked it so well that I stayed several days to explore the area which includes; Brough, Brougham and Pendragon Castles. The hostel is conveniently located near all the amenities of Kirby Stephen and it's a 1 minute... More

I stayed at this friendly hostel with my family and friends. The facilities were great, beds comfortable and rooms spacious. Denise offered lots of helpful advise on where to run, walk and what to see in the local area. The quirky environment offers an interesting stay with varying areas to retreat to. The proximity to shops is a great advantage... More

I stayed at the hostel in September 2011 during my walk on the "Coast to Coast Walk". The peaceful atmosphere and the warm welcome from Denise made this place a perfect spot to rest. The rooms are spacious and in the quiet rear of the building, assuring a good night’s sleep away from the main road. There are ample and... More

I stayed with a group walking part of the coast to Coast route. We were greeted warmly and made to feel at home immediately. Denise & cousin Lesley cooked delicious and abundant meals, and served up home-cooked quiche and gluten-free biscuits (one member of our party being coeliac) with our packed lunch. Special diets were catered for without fuss. Accommodation... More

In common with so many other reviewers, we had a wonderful time, having used it for my 60th birthday celebrations. Denise was so helpful; nothing was too much trouble. Being able to come back Sunday afternoon for something to eat and shower before return journeys made an enormous difference. And the building was just so wonderful and full of character.... More

A group of 15 stayed for one night on the Coast to Coast walk and found the accomodation and style of the place suited us just fine. We self catered for 23 (15 going the whole way and another 8 joining us for a couple of days). In comparison with some of the places we stayed this was real luxury:... More

I travelled as part of a group C to C. Nothing as too much trouble to help us enjoy our stay. Special diets were catered for cheerfully. The food was plentyful and homecooked, incredients bought in local market or from Denise's garden. Interesting old chapel with the shared accomodation in the main high vaulted main room, giving it an interesting... More

By YHA standards this hostel finishes a little short on quality but in the end it suffices as a place to stay at a very reasonable price. This used to be a YHA but Denise the current operator has chosen to convert the costs of being associated with that body into savings for the budget lodger and in this regard... More

I have been staying in this hostel on a regular basis for the last 4 months and would recommend it to all travellers and walkers coming through Kirkby Stephen. Nothing is too much trouble for Denise; she is always on call to let guests in at any time of the day and will do what she can to make your... More
