went with Mr Gao / Mr Trip to the day trip Surin Islands . The trip is well organized, the staff friendly and competent, the catering very good on board, and the equipment is very good. Only the snorkeling places are behind expectation , we had perhaps only 15 m of visibility , many of the coral dead or dying and very few fish to see , no larger fish at all, or any other snorkeling highlight. We found Surin Islands disappointing . Further more , it is important to understand, that there are NO other snorkeling opportunities out of Ko Phayam . If you like to snorkel , Ko Phayam is not your place. In general, Mr Gao/Mr Trip seems to be a very good choice for bungalow renting and beach access , but we stayed elsewhere.

2018: this was our fourth time and we were really disappointed. Mr. Gao is now more interested in selling trips than in the upkeep of the resort. As bungalows were rather rundown we opted for a room in the building this time which was disappointing as there was no space for clothes, no beside light and no water for hours and when it finally was provided, after Mr. Gao had come back from his trip and repaired whatever had been wrong, it was all brown and muddy. We were told that this was the case all over the island which we know isn't true (own experience and other people's). Besides the front door the room did also have another one opening to the families quarters - the odd thing was: there was no key to the lock. [(As we had pre booked for four days (lucky us only four, as we also wanted to try a different beach this time) and all negotiations did not lead to a satisfying solution we stuck it out and won't return. ] Food was also worse this time - but the neighboring kitchen is still excellent and worth a try. Another fact you should be aware of: The guests were 90% German. At 1500 Baht fan (2500 AC) it is overpriced for what you get - but there is plenty more accommodation to chose from on the island - we have found a great bungalow on Aow Yai now and are happy with our decision and will definitely come back to the island but will avoid Mr. Gao's in the future.

we got the "beach" bungalow…which was a little too far away from the beach to really have the feeling of being "on" the beach (and a bit too close to the kitchen of the neighboring resort)…but hearing the ocean at night and in the evening was enough to make me happy to be there. The restaurant had very good reviews, although we found it to be merely average, and ended up eating most of the time thereafter at Heavenly down the beach (which we would highly recommend as a general hang-out). I must say, however, that drinking fresh coconuts, fresh pineapple juice, and fresh watermelon juice was unbelievable there..since other places tend to add sugar syrup and water… The location of Mr. Gao is perfect. Its just at the end of the beach, so not much foot traffic, and easy to access all the other little places along the beach…very quiet. We took a snorkeling trip out with the Mr. Gao associated boat: Mr. Trip, which is anchored right out front (and sometimes produces horrible gasoline smells when they come back from a trip and start repairing or cleaning the boat…lounging on the beach at that time can be a bit obnoxious). Unfortunately, the trip was a bit overpriced, and sadly, most of the corals are dead around Surin islands, so it was a bit depressing. Still, the trip was well organized. The beach chairs were quite nice to sit in and watch the horizon, or read…very relaxing there. The best was simply grabbing one of the free kayaks and taking a little trip around to the other beaches and waterways. Also renting a scooter was great to zip around the island. All in all, I would recommend Mr. Gao, although might try a different place next time.

I wanted old Thailand before the big hotels moved in, how it was years ago. So we chose Ko Phayam and Mr Gao’s We had booked a room with a sea view and fan and ensuite bathroom. The shower has no heat to it. But a cold shower is wonderful in this weather. In the restaurant they give you a book with your room number on and you write in what you have eaten. Specials are written on the board. We tried The Filo, which was the most amazing spring rolls you get 6 halves to a plate. Bbq prawns a mere 100bht wonderful. Whole bbq snapper 350 baht. The rooms are not sound proof. They let in the sounds of the ocean and the birds. The bay outside is beautiful. Two other places a stones throw to eat and drink. They don’t hire beach towels. WIFI is in the restaurant as well as the deck chairs close by. The electric stays on longer than I expected. The staff are kind and helpful. Kayaks to hire. Trips out with Mr Trip to the National reserve. I loved this place. I will remember it for a long time.

We stayed here for 3 nights in January 16, as I said in a previous review, we changed 4 places in 10 days because the island was busy. Luckily we found this one available for 3 nights. Bungalow is not very big but is charming, with a lovely little terrace and beds to chill out watching the sea. Right on the sea, so you walk 30 seconds and there you are already on the beach. The price was good but here is the difference with places like next door called Klong Kleng. Mr Gao cuts the electricity from 7 o' clock in the morning until the evening. If you want to charge your phone however you can do so at the restaurant, but you won't have a fan working in the bungalow if you want to sleep until late or chill out in the afternoon in the bed, especially taking into consideration that it was very very hot. Also there is not hot water, not huge deal, for me was only to shave in the morning. Restaurant is nice and the food is very good, staff is friendly. This is a bit more of a budget place and is very good value for money. If coming back will not hesitate to stay there again for a few nights.

Stayed here in the extreame low season on Phayam (weather was great) me and my girlfriend were having a fine time trying to find places open to eat in the eve. Somebody suggested that Mr Gaos stays open all year so we dropped by and moved in for a week. The Beach is great and we paid around 500 bht for our room which maybe a little high for off season on Phayam but bearing in mind he does stay open all year and has to run the Electric it was fine. The food here is very good and nice prices too its my second fav place to eat on phayam. This place is packed high season with people who return year after year for the beach, Food and of course Mr Gao. We found ourselves the only guests at the time of year (i think we were the only tourists left on the island late june) And in the eve we were invited to sit in with Mr Gao and the staff for an eve of stories and whiskey. My fav was the Penang curry made with pork and the massaman. Prices are cheap and portions if i remeber were large. Rooms a step up from basic bungalow types, basic and comfortable facing the lovely beach at aow kow kwai. Every morning swimming is great and for 3 days running my morning dip was extra special by the family of six or so Sea otters who would join me for my morning swim. These i think are quite rare in thailand and the local name in Meow nam meening water cat. The staff had very limited english although this did not really pose much of a problem and they were very friendly and kept the beach and bungalows very clean. Mr gao is well liked and respected on the island and always makes time to ask about your day and see if your stay at his place is ok. If you find any thing amiss just mention it and it will be sorted out quickly.

Ever wondered why some places are empty and others full well Mr Gao on Ko Payam is an example of what to do in getting it right. So many other resorts after a few days treat you as if you were not there , not Mr Gao. We stayed for 12 nights in this resort and loved every minute of it. The food was great with an interesting menu , the resorts bungalows were nicely furnished and cleaned to a high standard and the staff were helpful without being obtrusive. Ko Phayam beach is a jewel of gold soft sand that allows swimming when the tide is in or out. We were only disturbed once in the night by a fuul moon party but this was a little price to pay for such a super resort at the super price of 900 Bhat a night. Other beach proprieters could learn alot from Mr Gao.

Excellent place to stay and for 800 bahts night it makes for an affordable holiday. The beach is very sandy and close to the bungalows and there is a kayak for hire for the adventurous. You see the odd other soul so it's not completely isolated. It is very easy to escape from the stresses of the world at Mr Goa's. The mosquito nets are good quality and fit all the way round the bed. The restaurant is one of the best and the staff are very friendly and efficient.
