Fantastic location, very friendly, excellent homemade food available (good for veggies too), nothing was too much trouble. Have already booked to stay again. Hostel very warm and good drying room. Be prepared for unmade access track of approx 1 mile - fine by car but you have to go slowly and take care!

Another review from the same group as Jojeba & LichfieldGordon. The location is great, parking plentiful, rooms are typical YHA - clean and basic although I would say the private room we had was quit chilly, however propping open the door and letting the 'heat' in from the corridor helped, bathrooms were basic but fine, most importantly the showers were... This is a follow up to LichfieldGordon's review. I was part of that group and would like to make a couple of points to the YHA's response. 1) I cannot understand how you can have a bigger run on breakfast than expected, when our group had all booked, and paid for, our breakfasts weeks in advance. And if you had... More

Went to Helvyllyn last week - Easter weekend. Ample parking - no worries. Checked in - was given a cold look by the guy at reception with a look "what are you guys doing here?" sorta stare. I also noticed the person at reception gave directions to all the white guests, whilst we, being brown, were simply handed the keys... More

The one this I consider just as bad a racism is the casual and false accusation of racism towards another person. The person who checked you in was the gentlest, least judgemental guy on the planet. It took less than 5 minutes to get your veggie sausages. I know as I cooked them off straight after you asked for them... More

The YHA is an organisation that can't seem to work out what it is anymore. It used to be cheap and basic. Now it's not that cheap, but it's still pretty basic and they are amazingly inflexible. Helvellyn is more of a conflicting mass than most. The location is just stunning, about a mile up an unpaved road from Glenridding.... More

Your booking may have been almost two months ago but I seem to have a clearer memory it than you. The eggs situation: well fair doos, we did run out of eggs. We had a much bigger run on breakfast on the Saturday than expected and thus we were somewhat short for the Sunday. Did we refuse to cook you... More

Stayed one night, and only had their bog standard breakfast which, as always, is brilliant! Really friendly staff, bunk rooms were adequate, men's shower could do with being fixed, though other showers and good volume and temperature. Excellent drying room. Walked down to Glenridding for dinner, about 30 mins max, recommend the Ramblers bar in the Inn on the lake.... More

Thanks for the kind words, Rob! We pride ourselves on being a friendly, easy-going bunch and always endeavor to cook a mean breakfast. You'll be happy to know that the shower was fixed (the constantly dripping, jammed one, right?) a few days later. Hope to see you again in the not so distant future. More

I was there for only one night, but that was enough to show how unprofessional the hostel works. We were quite a big group of exhausted hikers and some of us were really hungry, but the hostel just offered us the choice between three different meals (I mean that's not the point: fish and chips, cumberland sausages, veggie curry (my... Surely you can understand why we couldn't feed you all? Fourty people turning up, having not booked any food or given any warning of wanting any, at 6:30pm on a Saturday night would give even a large restaurant kittens. We have to control stock and costs in this business and given that you were taking up the majority of he... More

Arrived at the hostel on Friday evening with my son and a couple of fellow walkers. We got a great friendly reception by the staff who was very helpful. We were given lots of information and advice especially about the bar closing time. The bar is well stocked the variety of alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks with plenty of snacks.... More

I'm very pleased that you found our hostel and our staff so accomodating. We try our best to be as friendly, informal and helpful as we can and I'm glad our efforts have contributed to a great stay. A hearty breakfast in the morning also helps so I'm happy this was to your liking too. Please come back and see... More

It's worth staying here just to feel like you are truly off the beaten track, and can see the stars so clearly at night as it's so secluded. Quite a small hostel. We booked the double room which wasn't very roomy, including the bed. However, it was just a base for us. Drying room is very useful and the kitchen... More

I'm happy that you enjoyed our hostel and the surrounding area. I hope that you'll be back another day sooner rather than later. The TV will be working soon (not that you wanted it!), and I'll see if I can get some funding to install sockets in the rooms (this has been a commen issue). I hope you informed a... More

I love this hostel, its small welcoming and I get on great with most of the staff, its relative isolation a good mile outside of Glenridding means you tend to spend at least one night of your stay in their licensed café, bar. For walkers the location is excellent, from the front gate you literally step out onto the fells.... More

A great review spoiled by a grossly unfair personal attack on one of my staff. As you said, the taking of your coat by another guests was a mistake. That guest's coat was on the radiator, you later removed the coat and put yours in it's place and when that said customer went to collect the coat for his wife,... More
