Just returned home from a delightful 6-night stay in Point Reyes Station. I'd organized a "Yogation" for 10 with housing in the Schoolhouse and Jasmine Cottage, and it was perfect for us! Having the two adjacent lodgings with lovely grounds and all the amenities of home (and then some) and an easy walk to Yoga Toes studio and shopping/eating/hanging out... More

This is a lovely place to stay with many amenities including kitchen, barbecue, outdoor sitting/dining space, lush gardens all around and walk to town. There are several private residences available in the compound including a 4 bedroom house with a gourmet kitchen. I've stayed many times and found it ideal with easy access to the coast and Pt. Reyes National... More

I tried to cancel my reservation for Memorial Day weekend about 2 weeks beforehand because I just received a diagnosis that my dog had a mast cell tumor (cancer). I was told that I would not get any refund unless they could book the cottage to someone else (that is not a refund - it is reselling the room). Fortunately,... More

The cancellation policy for the Schoolhouse Compound is always explained when a potential guest makes a reservation over the phone. It is written in detail on the Webervations site when people reserve online, and a reservation cannot be complete without checking the box for having 'read and agreed to the policy.' It is also reiterated in detail on the paper... More

We have stayed at Jasmine Cottage for three times now over the past decade and loved it everytime. The first time we went our children were toddlers, now they are teenagers. But every time was special. The love toasting marshmallows outside on the chiminea and cooking together (or going down the hill to the Bovine Bakery or Point Reyes Cafe... More

The sleeping accommodations we encountered were disappointing. Upon arrival, we learned that the queen sized bed we were anticipating was NOT in this room and instead in a downstairs room, which we could acquired for an additional $150.00 a night. We looked back at the website and saw that it is not entirely clear, and clearly we misunderstood the intended... More

What a shame these folks didn't let me know of their disgruntled state when i met them in the gardens and inquired as to their comfort instead of assuring me that everything was just fine. I was given no hint that they were so unhappy. They were all smiles. (I received this full page typewritten letter of fcomplaint composed after... More

Taken the family (4 & dog) there twice now. We love it! Close enough to walk into Point Reyes Station, but far enough to be completely quiet at night. Staff are friendly and helpful but not intrusive. It's a perfect jumping-off point for exploring the area. We'll be back again and again.

My family gathered at Point Reyes Schoolhouse Compound to get ready for and celebrate our daughter's wedding, which was at the Dance Palace. The compound was a perfect place for family members to have privacy in the schoolhouse, cottage, retreat and loft, and also gather together. Also it is walking distance to town. We baked cookies for wedding favors and... More

I came here with my family as a child and now have the pleasure of returning as an adult to spend weekends at the Schoolhouse in Pt Reyes. It's the perfect distance from the city to spend a long weekend or a quick overnight, and the location is very accessible for hiking and beaches. Plus, just a short walk to... More

The Schoolhouse itself is lovely although it definitely could have been cleaner (lots of dust bunnies). The problem was the beds - absolutely the worst I have ever encountered in a rental unit. Some could not even qualify as beds. For instance one " bed" was a very decrepid cot. Another sagged terribly in the middle and was supported at... More

We are disappointed when our Schoolhouse home does not match a guest's expectations. We make every effort to be as clear as possible on our website regarding the sleeping accomodations where we list the second bed in the children's room as a "cot". (This is a very sturdy 'Big Guy Cot' purchased from a major hunting catalog along with 2... More

I have had the pleasure of staying as a couple in the Barn Loft and with 4 longtime friends for a weekend getaway in Gray's Retreat this year...perfect locations for each trip's purpose. First of all, the personal, artistic touches of the proprietor, Karen, is present in her attention to detail (fresh-cut arranged flowers, local point of interest books, local... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
After ten years of hard work at night and on weekends, with not much more than our carpentry skills and determination, we had a home. We raised children, chickens, vegetables, fruit trees and honey bees here, making blackberry jam every summer. We built the wood-fired oven in the garden, a pond, Jasmine Cottage, Gray’s Retreat and the Barn Loft. I was a professional artist for many years, then commuted from the Schoolhouse to U.C. Berkeley to become a landscape architect. Twenty-five years ago I converted the carriage house to Jasmine Cottage. It was the very first cottage open to visitors as a Point Reyes vacation rental. Point Reyes area lodging at the time was just a few traditional bed and breakfasts in Inverness with a couple small motels on that side of Tomales Bay. Inverness was the place for holidays then; Point Reyes was a working cow town. Nobody thought visitors would want to stay in the little town of Pt. Reyes. Because I offered a secluded garden cottage with an invitation to bring the children and the family dog, Jasmine Cottage was instantly popular as a romantic get-away and a family retreat. Sixteen years ago I designed and built the barn that houses Gray’s Retreat and the Barn Loft, intended as places for our extended family to visit and as part-time vacation rentals. ... more   less
