Santa Clara

I had some visiting family members stay in this motel, having picked it off the internet from the attractive photos and because it was in the area where they needed to stay.

What a terrible experience. The rooms look nothing at all like the photos on the internet. The rooms are shabby and dirty. Handles are broken off the dresser drawers. The bedspread on one of the beds had a four-inch hole in it. The metal door of their room had huge dents in it, as though it had been battered from the outside with a baseball bat.

But the worst aspect was the managers. The nighttime manager was on oxygen and clueless. The daytime manager seemed to have emotional problems bordering on mental illness. Her explanations of rules and services at the property were garbled, and when not understood, she screamed and ranted at me, and hung up the phone repeatedly rather than answer questions. The same behavior was repeated in person when I stopped by to pay for the room.

Though I live in Northern California I periodically have to travel to the Bay Area for training and can't bear the thought of commuting 2-3 hours back home at night and then try to make it to the training in the early morning to fight the morning commute. Thus I look for economical places to stay in the South Bay and the Santa Clara Inn definitely qualifies as economical.

Some of their paperwork and the partially covered-up street sign indicates this was once a Best Western motel. I'm not sure if it's truly independent or perhaps they're trying to become a Best Western franchise member again.

In any case, they were/are renovating the lower floor rooms when I visited -- pulling off wallpaper, painting, replacing carpets, etc. Honestly I can't tell if my room was recently renovated but given the wear on the carpet and furniture I don't think anything in it could be much more than 2-3 years old anyway.
