We stayed six nights in a small cabana i the Stadrust Village area, with a view to the ocean and the sound of waves and birds singing in our ears. The food at the spacious restaurant was very good and made only of pure, natural and fresh ingredients. The hotel organised tripos for us in the sorrundings - bird, crocodile and elephant watching. The staff was very smiling and organized and we can only recommend this to any traveller.

We stayed at Hotel Stardust in January 2011 for 6 nights and we thoroughly enjoyed it, very beautiful place. The rooms are clean, fan, mosquito nets and all rooms have balconies or terrasse. The cabana was lovely with the outside shower and with the sound of the ocean it was perfect, like a dream.

The staff at Hotel Stardust is just superb, nothing is too much trouble for them. They are friendly, helpful and attentive, you really feel welcomed.

The restaurant area was really nice; it is a wonderful atmosphere to dine in. The food are brilliant far better than anywhere else we ate, it really is the best food on the island.

Lovely beach without doubt the best beach we visit. Here is very clean, it has local fishing boats and a lot of atmosphere.

The hotel is extremely well managed by a Danish lady Merete Scheller and we highly recommend this Hotel, it is the best place to stay in Sri Lanka.

Extremely loud Doof Doof music with penetrating Bass until 4AM on Thursday mornings. Apparently every Wednesday night. Absolutely insane. No sleeping for about a quarter to half a kilometre around the area. I will be moving out before the next Doof Doof event

Room Tip: Doof Doof party until 4AM. Super loud. Good for partying but zero chance of sleeping through it.

Very nice resort - directly at the long, long beach - in the middle of a tropical garden full of flowers, palmtrees and exotic birds. Cosy rooms - we had one in the main building, 2. floor, with big balcony. Early morning-tea served every day with a smile, great food in the beach-restaurant, 1A (hot stones) massages, yoga-classes, great swimming, endless beach-walks & best surfing! But the very best in this lovely resort is the managing couple - Susy & Hendrik - so cool! We had a great time with you! ThanX for everything & hope to see you again! Dani & Armin

Great location. The beach its great. Walking on the beach in the evening felt so nice. Staff was great. They helped us so much. They welcomed us so warmly. The cabanas were nice and very tidy. It was located few steps away from the beach. So every time you can here the sound of the waves, Great Place.

When we arrived we were greeted with juice and smiles. The staff are so friendly and have really represented the hotel well. Doing everything to make our stay the best they could. They even booked train and bus tickets for us.

For the first few nights we stayed in a cabana and then later moved into a room. Both were great and I had lots of fun!

The view is great being right on the beach. Easy access to the main road and nice tuk tuk drivers and scooter hire available.

The restaurant makes delicious food although a little expensive it makes up for it in taste. There's such a great vibe with the music and chill zone. Even letting us borrow books of many languages (German, English and Danish) from the shelves.

A great experience overall!

We picked the place as it had fairly good reviews on Tripadvisor. It´s okay but nothing more. Furnitures are broken, employees are tired, food is okay but not a joy, position is great but it is an empty place that has lost it´s touch and feeling. We are not going back and we will not recommend it as the price is too high in relation to what you get. I hope that someone will see the potential and turn the place around.

After a week of touring Sri Lanka with a guide, we were very much ready to lose the tour groups and 'samey' buffet food in place of a rather more chilled-out pace of life for the second week of honeymoon. I was a little concerned after reading some reviews (including that in the Lonely Planet) that the team at Stardust were somewhat unfriendly. We certainly didn't get this vibe on arrival when we were greeted with warm smiles and well needed cold fruit drinks. Although the manager isn't overly 'in your face', she's a quiet and unassuming lady who clearly takes a lot of pride in her business. Her nephew Sophus is there helping for the summer season and he's been great to us throughout. We opted to stay in one of the cabanas and were given one in 'Rainbow Village' with only two other neighbours. The cabana faced out to the ocean and you could hear the waves rolling in each night. Of course there were also the sounds of palm squirrels and birds but that only added to the atmosphere. We were expecting the cabana to be fairly basic which it was, but there was a lovely homely charm to it and we loved the feeling of being truly away from it all. The team at Stardust had put lovely flower petals over our bed as well as a huge vase of flowers in the room to celebrate our honeymoon which was a really sweet touch. We loved the private yet open air bathroom where we could hear the wildlife outside whilst showering (as well as sharing the shower with the odd frog!)
We didn't suffer with lack of air con as the ceiling fan worked great and slept in just light sheets. In terms of activities - we rented Stardust's canoe which we spent a good couple of hours paddling out into the nearby lagoon with - again for great wildlife spotting. We also booked a tour to Kumana National Park (formally Yala East) through the hotel and throughly enjoyed. On our final couple of days we hired bikes from a shop about 5 mins up the road from Starduat called 'Ecowave' which supports local farmers and communities. For 400 rupees each for the day (about £2), the bikes were a total steal and we cycled miles on them - to some more secluded beaches and also to another nearby national park where we saw many elephants on the journey. The walk from Stardust to the more swimmable parts of Arugam's beach takes around 20 mins along the lovely sand or parallel road which we didn't mind at all. In fact, we much preferred the location of Stardust to some of the backpacker resorts closer to the main beach - we couldn't imagine staying down the other end of the bay with the parties and loud music (showing our age we know!) Breakfast at Stardust was lovely with lots of options and GREAT coffee. We only ate in the restaurant on a couple of evenings however as we preferred to explore the many other eateries and bars in Arugam Bay (Siam View our fave for spicy Thai food and great music). I did have grilled fish at Stardust one eve which was delicious. Only slight negative of our stay (and this really is a tiny thing) was that a few of the staff were a little on the slow side when serving/arranging things, but all were very friendly. We loved our stay at Stardust and would definitely recommend to others :-)

This was our second stay at Stardust (first visit was in 2010), and we were delighted when we arrived to discover that we were to stay in the same beach cabana as the last time. The cabana was everything we remembered it to be. Comfortable bed with mosquito net, spacious room, amazing open air bathroom plus the addition of extra shelving and a fridge which we previously didn't have. The cabanas face onto their own private garden space and are surrounded by countless palm trees where lizards, geckoes and squirrels rumage. While the cabanas at Stardust are reason enough to travel thousands of miles to visit it is the location of the hotel that is the real draw. Occupying a prime spot at the beginning of Arugam Bay Stardust is totally quiet and peaceful and ideal for relaxing despite there being a couple of newer guesthouses nearby. The village of Arugam Bay itself is just one street with plenty of restaurants and guesthouses and although busier than on our last visit it still manages to retain its rustic charm.

We ate at the Stardust restaurant several times during our stay and found their rice and curry to be among the best we tasted on our trip. We were able to specify how spicy we liked our curry (very) and were served generous portions of very fresh and tasty food. Although the prices are slightly more expensive than in some of the smaller restaurants the quality of the food is such that this is irrelevant.

We would definitely stay at Stardust again if we return to Arugam Bay.
