This is an ideally-located pub and guest-house for the last day of the Thames Path. Melody, the owner, is welcoming and friendly. The rooms are in the 18th/19th Century part of the building and have a nice charm about them, though they are not en-suite (but that will hardly bother anyone coming in from a long day on the river).... It cannot be disputed that The Red Lion is in a fantastic position with its beer garden rolling down to the bank of the River Thames. However, it is one of those unfortunate pubs who allows its location to somehow excuse its lack of basic common courtesy. The female bar staff and landlady are surly, abrupt, rude and unhelpful. The... More

Having driven down from Essex after work on a Friday evening, arriving about 10pm, (having booked in advance, and not having been asked to state an arrival time) the landlady greeted us with a telling off that we had arrived late, as "most guests arrive earlier, and want a dinner". We occupied the twin room and double room on the... More

Called in one evening recently to see what the place was like with the proviso of just having a couple of drinks. After struggling to find anywhere to sit (all the tables were laid for eating despite the place being empty) we stood by the fire in an empty room to the side of the bar. That was however short... This place is rather strange, a rather odd mix of furniture and styles which generally don't mix - odd sofas (presumably obtained from Free-Cycle Sites) pushed hard against walls creating an expanse of space in the middle. But more importantly than that the venue hosts the most unpleasant Landlady I have ever encountered, downright ruse would be an understatement. I... More

I have visited the Red Lion on quite a few occasions [not my choice] and it is possibly one of the worst pubs I have ever been to. The actual look of this pub is quaint and when you walk in there is a lovely country pub air... however, that is where the positives stop. The service is appalling; led... More

We went to the Red Lion for a family meal. Our table was in the conservatory which was so cold that after the evening 3 of the party were ill with colds! No one came to take our food order even though there were at least 3 staff hanging around the bar just wondering about. We decided to place our... More

Stayed for one night at the Red Lion as our first night stop from walking from the source. We have 2 dogs (no dogs allowed in accom.) but Melody the landlady had told us that her son owned a nearby kennels & he came and picked the dogs up and brought them back next morning when we were ready to... Walking the Thames path with my parents last weekend, this was our finish for the day. I really wish we'd stayed just outside the village in 'the-lodge b and b' ... or back in lechlade. Can't book on the website / email, and payment is on card for the deposit. The building is indeed 'higglepigeldy' - but that's where the... More
