Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a beautiful hotel that is a real throw back! Old but certainly not in bad shape! It's beautiful! Would stay here again! We love the old classics! The beautiful wood bannisters! The feel of a bygone era. So glad we got to experience it. Good location too!

Fantastic hotel. Easy parking. Front desk staff were very friendly. Room was small but perfect for an overnight business stay. Room service dinner was excellent. Bathroom has an oversize glass shower. Comfortable bed. Very clean. Can't think of a thing to change. Will definitely be back.

Went to Hotel Julian again for their NYE bash and it, again, did not disappoint. The staff, room, food, drinks and the deal was exellence. Not to mention the pool and hot tub area. It seriously could not have been better. I would dare to say that this NYE was even better then last years!

That was a Christmas trip, and we stayed there for 3 nights. The hotel is fantastic; we immediately felt at home. It was so clean and cozy! The Christmas decorations were stunning, and the staff was welcoming and calm. The room and bathroom were spacious. The mattresses were comfortable, and the sheets were ironed – 60% cotton; 40% polyester. There were spa robes in the room. We also had a fridge, coffee maker, mugs, glasses, wine glasses, and even a corkscrew in the room. Everything we needed was there! And the price for all that was incredible - $85 per night! We only had two minor issues - dry air and pillows. Next time, I'd bring a travel humidifier with me, as the air was very dry. Also, I'd upgrade the pillows. They have four different types of pillows for different types of sleepers, I guess, but none of them suited me well. The restaurant had a special Christmas dinner and brunch. Everything was delectable! They didn't offer a wide selection of desserts, but they served us ice cream that wasn't on the menu. Unfortunately, we couldn't use the pool as it was always busy. Families with kids were there from early morning till late at night. The swimming pool looked much larger in the photos but was smaller than expected in reality. In general, it's a fabulous place! Would we go there again? Absolutely!

The good was that it was close to everything, but most hotels in the area are. This Hotel is advertised as classy, elegant, and recently renovated. We prepaid our booking through Expedia, but upon arrival the receptionist charged my husband for our stay plus a deposit, first problem, I contacted Expedia they apologized, not the Hotel reps. Second problem, to get to our room we had to walk around trash and dirty plates sitting over night in the hallway. Third problem, this "fancy hotel" does not clean or fix the beds so if you are staying more than one night be prepared to do the house keeping just like being at home. Fourth problem, the night club down the street will have the party going until 2am so you will be able to get some rest once they close. Fifth problem, the a/c in the room can't be controlled by the guest so you have to call the receptionist to request any modification or you can just freeze. We honestly have been in hotels in third world countries with much better service than this place.

Very nice restored hotel. Clean and expertly restored. Has a nice lounge and restaurant within the building. Close proximity to several sites and retail shops. My wife and enjoy staying in older hotels that have been updated. The staff was very friendly and helpful. This is hotel and area along the Mississippi is most certainly on our return list.

First, let me say that the staff here is awesome. The hotel itself is a beaut and the location is smack in the epicenter of Dubuque awesomeness. We were traveling to Iowa to see a show at the casino and then to pop down to Galena. This is clearly the best hotel in the area, historic, elegant and reasonably priced. When we arrived, we stepped in some wetness in our room. We called the front desk and let them know and asked for another room. However, the hotel was sold out along with everywhere else in the area. So, the manager was kind enough to comp the room and get maintenance to fan dry the wet and disinfect the room. Plus, they comped the stay. I've had a couple of really negative experiences with hotel managers who had no idea what customer service is about. At Hotel Julien, the staff gets an A+. The areas for improvement to get a perfect 5 stars would include: better pillows (these are that thin type), actual vending machines on the floors that say "ice/vending" (there only seemed to be ice machines). And, one of the two elevators was out of service leading to a difficult exodus this morning. All of those are easy fixes. So, cheers to Hotel Julien. It's a really lovely place.

It was a delightful hotel. Lobby is what hotel lobbies used to be. Bathroom was a bit dirty, and shower could use a bit of hard scrubbing. Our thermostat was broken and would not let us set a good temp. Kept fluctuating between hot and cold. Wouldn’t stick to a temperature. It was late when we got back to our room after a wedding, so didn’t want to try to move, and wouldn’t have been anyone on staff to fix it. It would blow hot, room would get too hot, then it would blow cold and room would freeze. Coffee maker looks like it hasn’t been cleaned since it was installed in room. I will try to upload pics of it. Other than those few things, it is a unique hotel with an old time feel.

The hotel lobby and rooms are nicely decorated, beds comfortable, room quiet. Cons: lack of daily housekeeping or water either in the room or fitness room. Bathroom shower door of glass meant only one person in the bathroom at a time which isn't ideal for a 2 queen bed room that sleeps 4 people. Overall, I do not think the experience was worth the cost, largely due to lack of daily housekeeping.
