The George used to be a regular haunt of ours a few years back, as the food was reliably good. Things changed a bit when a new chef moved in, but now the previous chef owner is back – and so are we! The menu is short but comprehensive, there's always an interesting specials board and the food is clearly... More

We booked a table for 8 for a family celebration for Sunday lunch. The service was very very slow. We all ordered starters, main course. The starters came and they were awful - "fillet of macarel on a beetroot bed turned out to be some flakes on beetroot, welsh rarebit was cheap and nasty, just terrible. The main course was... More

Juicy Lucy Obviously, we appreciate that anybody is free to hold an opinion on us, and that anybody is free to post their opinion on tripadvisor. However, with your particular review, we would like to clear up a few issues. - We can assure that the "flakes on beetroot" were flakes of (smoked) mackerel. - Every dessert (with the exception... We called in here for lunch as it's in The Good Pub Guide. It's a real pub with a choice of real ales. It has real pub furniture, and there was a log fire. The food was outstanding for a pub. I had wonderful steak and kidney pie - tender, lean meat and kindeys too! It was notable too for... More

I've eaten here on three separate occasions with the food and service being fantastic every time. On my most recent visit I opted for two dishes from the specials board: Garlic Mushrooms with Melted Cheddar Cheese followed by Rump Steak and Fries. The mushroom dish was delicious; plenty of juicy vegetables smothered in a really flavoursome cheddar. The steak was... More

This used to be our favourite local restaurant but it changed hands recently (or the old owner came back). The menu looks like it's a chain restaurant and the food wasn't anywhere near the standard we were used to. Service, as always was fab but when we complained about the potatoes tasting stale (they looked great but had been pre-cooked... More

Went to the George for a friend's birthday dinner. Received great service, super food for value for money prices. Nice choice of meat and fish dishes including daily specials. All diners ejoyed theri meals, and the chef easily accommodated specials requests made by various members of our party. Desserts were super, the creme brulee, beard & butter pudding being praised... Others have noted the pleasures of this place: bath sheets instead of skimpy towels, biscuits with the tea and coffee makings, two bottles of water, etc in a large, clean, bright room in its own wing overlooking the garden. One bad review here has to do with the restaurant not the B&B but the restaurant is a good reason to... More

We had a booking with the restaurant 2 months prior our visit with our 12 friends, yet 5 days before our meal and only by chance we learnt that another group (who booked later) was given our seating position in the conservatory. No explanation was given and the alternative seating offered was highly unattractive, in the corridor near the kitchen... More

We only stayed one night but we'll be back. Excellent choice of ales, top class meal and large, well presented, room all at reasonable prices. Landlord and team helpful and accommodating.
