I was over from London visiting my sister who lives in Boston for Thanksgiving. We'd decided to visit Maine for a few days and came across the 1774 Inn on the Guardian website. Arriving in the rain, we didn't see the view that the others have raved about but we had a warm welcome from John and enjoyed reading in... more

We were given a lovely friendly welcome by John the Inn keeper on our arrival, with a cup of hot tea and some freshly made strawberry bread. The building itself it very old and full of character, with fine views over the Kennebec river. The place was quite quiet in October, but the beach at Popham was excellent for taking photographs.... more

What a wonderful place to stay! John & Jackie catered for our every need, as if we were friends rather than paying guests. The house has been beautifully refurbished (we enjoyed a tour, including the cellar!) and it was inspiring to see the new wallpapers and fabrics Jackie had expertly chosen. A comfortable bed, ensuite shower room and soft fluffy... more

We just stayed at the 1774 Inn over the weekend, as we attended a wedding in Phippsburg on Saturday night. We have two teenage children, one of whom is a vegetarian. John arranged for a special vegetarian breakfast for our son, which we appreciated very much. The beds were very comfortable and the Inn and its location were wonderful. Only... more

I rarely give five stars (or I guess it's circles on TripAdvisor), but our stay was as close to perfect as you can get. The Inn was recently renovated and the owners, John and Jackie, have done a fantastic job. Rooms are beautiful, beds are very comfortable, and there's a ton of indoor and outdoor common space. John and his... more

My Wife, infant son and I had the pleasure of staying at the Inn while visiting family nearby. The new owners, John and Jackie, were superb hosts who catered to our every need. The views of the Kennebec River and prime location between Bath and the Phippsburg beaches made this a fantastic getaway. Breakfast each morning was prepared perfectly and... more

This was one of the nicest places we stayed on our recent trip to New England. The Inn itself is beautiful with very tasteful decoration (lovely knick knacks!) and an amazing location right on the Kennebec River. We stayed in the Green Room, which is in a side addition to the original inn, which shared a bathroom with another room... more

My husband and I stayed at this inn in September '06. The house itself was a gem! The love and care that Debbie and Joe put into renovating this house can be seen in every room. We stayed in the less expensive Blue room which had a low ceiling but was clean and well appointed. We would have loved to... more

What can I say?...After a stuffy stay at the Squire Tarbox Inn close by, we were able to experience a breath of fresh air upon arrival and feel more than welcomed at this old mansion turbed B&B. The inn keepers were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was AMAZING. Book the Minnott room for a lovely water view and plenty of light.... more
