The 1720 House is a living example of a vanished past. Before there were cars, being close to the harbor really mattered, and the 1720 House is an easy walk from the ferry and the village of Vineyard Haven. Before people grew so big, doors and rooms were small and you will need to keep your elbows in as a... more

I've stayed at the 1720 House at least once every summer for the past five years and was appalled by some of the nasty reviews on this site. No, this is not the Four Seasons. This is indeed a very old house (built in, um, 1720; thus the name) with floors that bend and slope a bit, corners that are... more

My boyfriend and I stayed for 2 nights at the 1720 house. Abby, the owner talked me into booking a room becasue she said not many other places would be open in early April. She also promised a room with a King sized bed- which was a proiority. When we arrived at the inn, she had put us in a... more

I stayed in this hotel for one night on labor day weekend. I first saw the Yellow Room was available for the whole weekend on Orbitz for $225 but it wouldn't let me book for one night. I called the hotel directly and was told that I couldn't have the Yellow Room for one night because they were hoping to... more

I didn't have a car, so I loved the convenient location--you're so close to the beach and to the shops. I was traveling alone, which can be a great adventure...or not. This was in the former category, thanks to Abby, the owner of 1720 House. She runs the place as if she's entertaining friends, She couldn't have been more fun... more

My son booked rooms at the beautiful 1720 House for his wedding. The owner arranged everything from the caterer to the flowers. She met with my son and his finance in New York and helped design the invitations and announcements and found a Rabbi on the island to marry them. She wrote and submitted the announcement to The New York... more

My partner and I researched many B&B’s in Martha's Vineyard on the Internet and decided to spend a weekend at The 1720 House, our first visit to the Vineyard. We were late leaving New York and when we finally arrived in Massachusetts (and nearly missed the last ferry to Martha's Vineyard), we called the owner to inform her that we... more

I have been in the hospitality industry for over thirty years in one capacity or the other so I am very particular when I travel and/or vacation. I recently had the good fortune to be able to visit the island of Martha’s Vineyard. A business associate told me about The 1720 House in Vineyard Haven. I usually do not frequent... more

MY boyfriend and I stayed at the 1720 Inn and were so dissapointed by the inn keeper, her poor attitude and the callous treatment that we will never return to that B&B!! First of all, as an escaped New Yorker, the Inn Keeper is quite rude, short with guests and not a nice lady! She admonished us for wanting to borrow... more

Management response from

I apologize for any slight this couple may have experienced. Oddly, I find no guests in our records who match their description. We make a huge effort to make each guest happy and comfortable. (As is reflected in a number of our reviews) The (free) bikes are loaned to guests for a half day during their stay. I am not...

We couldn't ask for a nicer location. The house is quiet, rooms are cute and we were finally able to relax! It is close to the public library so I was able to check my emails and do some banking online. Most important it is in walking distance to the bus depo. This made our sightseeing around the island very... more
