On our first trip to the U.P., I looked for independently-owned lodging close to the areas where we planned to hike. The Gladstone Motel was run by a sincere woman, but her motel is a dump. I was first checked into a room that had a broken window air conditioner and requested a move since it was nearly 90 degrees that day. It was a dirty room.
