While traveling through Michigan recently, we were searching for an alternative to the usual hotel stay when we happened upon the Stuart Avenue Inn, situated right off of route 43. The inn is located in the Stuart Historic Neighborhood, an interesting area with some impressive examples of 100 year old Victorian homes and is directly across from the Kalamazoo College campus. The inn actually has a large enough room to accommodate families. Each room has a private bathroom as well as a small kitchenette, which is unusual for most B&B’s. The new innkeepers, Dana and Chris, were very welcoming and their enthusiasm about upgrades for both the guest quarters and gardens was evident with work already in progress. We had our choice of eating breakfast in either the dining area or outdoors in the garden. Our breakfast was delicious, with a selection of homemade breads along with locally grown fresh fruit. I don't know about you, but I have my reservations about staying in a B&B. It's someone's house, after all, in a way. Rooms are always a bit idiosyncratic, usually overly kitschy, etc.

But the Stuart Ave. Inn is a lovely place, and for a fan of Victorian architecture, a real treat. The whole public area of the giant house is a really astounding example of gorgeous woodwork, fancy wallpaper, big light windows, and lovely views. It's too bad the whole back is asphalt (parking lot) but the front and side gardens are really nice. My room was large, not too cutesy, comfortable bed, full basic cable, and there was even a small kitchenette attached. If I'd been traveling with my small child, this would have been a huge boon.

Without a car, there's nothing in walking distance (not a problem for most people in Kalamazoo, I'm guessing, but an issue for me), but it's a quick drive to anywhere.
