Algeria is a beautiful country, but the hospitality industry is not yet well developed. Hotels can be an adventure, especially if you are traveling on a budget. I'll remember the Frantz Fanon hotel because of its warm welcome and the excellent food. The owner was present, welcoming in a nice understated and hospitable way and an honest and engaging talker. If you visit Algeria as a package-tour tourist, you'll invariably end up in state-run hotels. This needn't be always bad, in fact, Algiers' El-Djazair is a fine example for a state-run hotel which is just perfect.
