We had the bad luck to arrive in Ely on the weekend of a major shindig that meant just about every motel room in town was already taken. "No Vacancy" signs were on all the motels, and even the Motel 6 on the edge of town was sold out. We might well have gotten the last room in the whole town, and it was a doozy.
Although we were warned that it was being "remodeled" (the carpet was so gross, my wife refused to set bare feet on it), we were charged the "normal" rate of $88. This is a motel whose sign says rooms are "$37 and up". Their few rooms are basically all the same. The "and up" means "we are price-gougers".
Although we were eventually given the room at the "discount" price of $77, it was the worst and most expensive motel room we stayed in during the next 10 days of travel throughout the southwest. Adding insult to injury, I came home and found that they had *triple-billed* me. That's right...
