In 2023, for professional reasons, I stayed for several weeks at the Sonesta Simply Suites in Jersey City, after regularly spending nights in Manhattan for 30 years. There are a large number of impressions and reasons to recommend this hotel for both short and longer stays. Here are just three reasons for anyone who frequently stays in New York, whether as a tourist or on business, and is frustrated with the development of the hotel industry there. The freshly renovated Sonesta impresses with its extraordinary staff. Exceptionally friendly, competent without exception, and professionally quick to act, one feels at home and cared for at all times, not just served. This applies to the entire crew, from the reception, to the technical services, to the housekeeping team. The rooms and apartments are freshly renovated and offer a standard that is unusual, with comfortable beds, seating areas, a workspace, and a functional kitchen with a stove and large refrigerator. The fitness room offers everything for a 24-hour workout, just like the well-stocked shop in the hotel. The Sonesta is a 10-minute walk from the Path Station at Exchange Place, from which you can reach the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan in just 7 minutes. Similarly, there is a wide selection of restaurants and shopping options within walking distance of the hotel, which you would search for in vain in Manhattan. The hotel offers a unique view of the Manhattan skyline, stretching from Hudson Yards to the One World Trade Center, which can be enjoyed from the comfort of your riverside room or during an evening walk along the Hudson. Those seeking to rediscover the thrill of New York will find the Sonesta in Jersey City an ideal choice. Nestled in a safe neighborhood, this location not only offers a vibrant city atmosphere for leisurely walks but also boasts the convenience of a quick journey across the Hudson to Manhattan, bringing the heart of the city within easy reach. The professionals have long since noted this insider tip.

Hotel's Favourite
We stayed at this place for 32 nights starting June 3rd. From the time we checked in, to the day of our departure, every member of staff, we interacted with, were gracious, helpful and very friendly. The PATH stations (Exchange Place & Newport) are both within 10 mins of walking. Shoprite is also less than 10 mins away. There are a lot of restaurants close by. The location is very safe and only 20 mins by car from Newark airport. We were checked in by Joneal, and she was extremely pleasant. We loved her friendliness and eagerness to always help. My wife and I keep talking about her wonderful smile while greeting us, on every occasion we approached her for help. Lorenzo, the operations manager went out of his way to support our needs. On the second day of our stay, we needed some extra dinnerware and cutlery, and rather than ask housekeeping he personally went and got it for us. During our stay we approached him on many occasions and were always greeted with wonderful friendly gestures and a willingness to make a difference to our stay. When I found out that Booking.com had made an error with our room rate that led to additional charges on our credit card, Lorenzo spent days correcting the error and made sure the refund was made prior to our check out. He did this without waiting for an acknowledgement from the third party vendor, thereby expediting the refund for us. When we needed to extend our stay by two more nights, Samantha, Director of sales was more than happy to help us, and even agreed to give us our existing rate in spite of the fact that the prevailing rate was twice that amount. Her friendly approach nudged us to ask her to give us a good rate for our return trip to the area, and she gladly obliged. We loved Sonesta suite so much that we cancelled our upcoming trip reservation at an Airbnb in the city, to Sonesta suites in Jersey city. All in all, a wonderful place to stay with an absolutely superb staff. We will keep on coming back.

TL;DR. This is a terrible hotel if you want a good night's sleep and you're not handy. We traveled from Massachusetts to the NYC area to see several performances at Lincoln Center. This hotel appears to have been designed as a long-term stay residence. The rooms have kitchenettes. However, I can't imagine a long-term stay here because of the noise. Basically, the back of this hotel faces the NJ Transit light rail, which appears to run very late into the evening. The property is located at a curve in the rail. So, when the trains are approaching, they make a loud screeching sound in addition to general train noise. Moreover, the walls in this hotel are PAPER thin! When we stepped into the room, we could hear the TV in the room next door like it was in our room with us. For these reasons alone, I would definitely look elsewhere. We got a room here during NYC's fall high season at $150 a night plus $30 for parking. At that rate, I still expect to at least get a good night's sleep. Then, there were the maintenance issues. Within an hour of check-in, we attempted to flush the toilet for the first time while in the room and it just backed up. Apparently, there are no maintenance workers at this property in the evening. We called the front desk...and were told they would leave a toilet plunger outside of our door! We had to clear the clog ourselves, which I have never had to do at a hotel before and I wouldn't expect at this price point. The front desk was responsive about asking the person in the neighboring room to turn down their TV. However, the neighbor apparently said we were too loud when moving into the room. (We weren't shouting or making a ton of noise - just speaking in a normal conversational tone while trying to get our things in the room.) It was only then that the front desk attempted to change our room. Okay, so toilet backing up - stay in the room and unclog it yourself. Complain about the neighbor - stay in the room and we'll call them. Neighbor complains about you - YOU HAVE TO MOVE NOW! Did I mention that I'm a brown person? What a messed up way to treat...some customers. Property is convenient to transit. As stated, the light rail was right outside the hotel and the walk to the PATH Station wasn't too far. However, for the reasons discussed above, I would never stay here again or recommend this property.

Reception staff were polite and helpful. Had a pleasant stay here, it was quiet and bed was very comfortable. Good kitchen facilities, a kettle would have been helpful to make tea, however saucepan was available to boil water. Close enough to walk to shopping mall. Would definitely stay here again.

im a traveling musician traveling for work at a building a mile away. i have a lot of luggage and equipment and needed to check in a little early so i wouldn't have to carry everything to sound check and back. I called at 1:30PM and asked if i could come in any time before 4pm to check in and they told me i had to pay an extra 50$ if i walked in any time before 4pm. I get asking for a fee for a noon check in. I get it for a 1:00 ,2:00 pm check in. But if i came in at 3:15 with all my stuff and the room is ready (its a sunday night in new jersey, not packed here at all) then i think they should try to accomodate me without asking for more money. i had to walk the mile with all my stuff and walk back with it, extremely uncomfortable. in my opinion this isn't right and not how you should treat hotel guests. Letting me in just a little early would have saved me a lot of trouble and discomfort, but they didn't care. All they wanted was more money. Worst part was, i asked the front desk when i finally got in what the deal was and he said i couldve gotten in at 3. i told him thats not what i was told on the phone and he didnt care at all just said 'sorry to hear'. Went back down for water ($2.00) and the guy i talked to on the phone was there now. He doubled down and insisted that any time before 4pm is a charge and thats hotel policy. Ridiculous. not how you treat people, let alone hotel guests. Don't stay here.

no way to get a good night's sleep when the dumpster is serviced at 4:27am day after day after day with management playing helpless. Light rail runs right behind the property, and dumpsters across from front, too. Abandon hope all ye who enter here.

This review applies before Sonesta's management, but I am submitting it if the same onsite managment is still present - there are several negative reviews during the same time period, so I hope they have been resolved. I stayed here several times over 10+ years because of its convenience & kitchen facilities, & most times something was not working or there were other problems in the rooms & I never submitted a review because I thought my business was valued & treated cordially -this changed during my last visits because of a few rude staff & not offering to resolve problems that ranged from the stopper not working in the bathtub (deliberate to avoid overflows as they were not event the correct size to cover the drain), to the HVAC, strong odors attempted to be disguised by. very strong room freshener (irritated my senses & absorbed by my clothes), icemaker in refrigerator not working &/or no ice maker at all in the refrigerator, sewage odor coming through the walls. Upon checkin I inspected the rooms & requested relief from some of these conditions - some were resolved (ie, bathtub stopper) but it took time out of my trip while I waited in my room for someone to do repairs. The response to the "no ice" problems included asking me to go the front desk to ask for ice from the staff's ice machine several times per day & most times there was only a cup of ice or none. This is not the proper response & it is not hygienic - I like to have control over making my own ice ( I wonder if it would be different with Covid). I offered a simple cheap resolution: provide me with some ice trays, but it was not done & It was in the 90s outside. Unbelieveably, my next stay, there was no ice maker in the regrigerator. That time, I was given a bag of ice (this should have been done the previous visit), but when it was delivered, a rude staff member asked if was the one who complained about no ice. I am a low maintenance traveller who likes to check in & go about my business without asking for anything, not even housekeeping during my week stay. However, when things in the room are not working, it is disruptive to my schedule. I do not think it was a coincidence that most of the rooms I was assigned had problems- female travellers sometimes do not get the same level of service as others & it is assumed we will just live with it. When I complained, it was met with a bullying attitude (ie, if i didn't like it too bad). Since my stays were a week or longer, I requested rooms in specific areas if available & even though they were confirmed verbally, I arrived to find that the room(s) was given away & I was given a room with a view of a stairway & when i expressed disappointment, was asked if I wanted to cancel & go elsewhere to find a room - after travelling over 10 hours to get there! How awful - sometimes staff have a nonhelpful attitude & treat guests like the enemy, failing to realize that they are the reason they have the job. I do hope that if I stay there again, that under Sonesta's management, this will not be tolerated. I have shared my concerns with Sonesta & have been requested to contact them asap if any of these issues are present. I also have a background in property management including environmental, health & safety (and have not mentioned all problems I observed).

This is a smaller hotel in jersey city about a 10-12 walk to the PATH train into Manhattan. Food shopping and a nice walk along the Hudson River are also close by. The rooms on the south side of the hotel (odd number rooms) face the local train and tracks- noisier during the day. The staff were generally friendly and helpful. The kitchen and air conditioning worked well but were also noisy - glad I brought some earplugs ! The room was spacious and comfortable. The sheets and towels are changed once a week but they do give you plenty to start with. The free laundry was also good- bring your own detergent. Over all , it was a decent value...
