I have stayed at this formerly family-owned hotel many times over the past fifteen years. Last year, it was resold to a company and a number of changes have been made. Pros: Rooms have been renovated. The room I stayed in had a tiled shower, jacuzzi tub (which I didn't use), high ceilings, a refrigerator and microwave, and a beautiful view of the mountains. I was on the corner and didn't hear any noise from other rooms, although there was some noise from the street, the parking lot, and the apartments down below the balcony. Bed was fairly comfortable and there was an air conditioner, although it was noisy enough that I didn't leave it on at night. The room and balcony were big enough that I was able to host two other couples for a get together (wine and cheese) on the balcony, although there were only two chairs and no table on the balcony. There is what they call a continental breakfast, but it is bread, toaster waffles, packaged donuts, and Honey Nut Cheerios, with coffee, hot water, and milk available. Some days there was yogurt and some days there was not. There is a pleasant small pool. You are asked to sign a waiver saying you will not do pretty much anything, including using the pool alone (seems unfriendly to solo travelers), but they don't force you to sign it. Cons: Most importantly, there is no longer any service during the stay. There was a subtle notice that you had to request service (not in a prominent place), as is not uncommon, but when I did ask on my third day that the trash cans be emptied and the broken screen door to the balcony be fixed, I was told it would be done immediately, which apparently meant never! Friends told me that they got tired of asking for the trash to be removed and put the trash out in front of their room. There was nothing I could do about the screen door--the gap in the screen door was wide enough that flies and a very large moth got into the room. Putting the screen back on the track didn't help--it was broken when I got there, or possibly never fit. I stopped using it after the second day. There was an attractive tiled shower, but weirdly the showerhead was a regular showerhead as if made for an ordinary small bathtub/shower, so you had to stand relatively close to the wall to shower. An overhead rainfall showerhead would have made this a better experience. The rooms are non-smoking, but the campus is not. There were people smoking on the balconies, in the parking lots, and others told me there were people smoking at the pool. Although this sometimes happens at many hotels, it was fairly pervasive and detracted from the experience. There is no desk, so when I needed to work, I sat on the bed or the balcony with my laptap. If you don't mind the smoking and the complete lack of service even when requested, this would be an o.k. stay. The service and charm of this being a family-owned hotel are gone, however, so I am eyeballing the Hampton Inn for my next stay. …
