We stayed at the Beyt al Amaan two nights. We thought it would be nice for our last two nights in Zanzibar, but it turned out totally negative. We booked the hotel in person, but soon after we checked in, they tried to move us out of the nice room we booked and into a smaller, dark room in the basement. Seems someone else walked in and offered them more money for the room we were in. The staff gave us a song and dance about all kinds of reasons we had to move, but since our old hotel was already booked, we did not move out.

We chose this hotel from our guide book which assured us that it was know as the “house of peace” with the “most extensive breakfast in East Africa. Wrong on both counts. The hotel does have a good location just a few minutes walk from the centre of Stone Town. However the cockerels and the mosques mean you will not have an unbroken sleep. The breakfast was probably the worst we had in Tanzania…very stodgy bread and pastries and some watermelon. The coffee was instant but the eggs weren’t..allow 15mins for your ‘ soft’ boiled egg.

The accommodation is run by a woman who is rude to her staff, rude to her customers and rude to her staff in front of her customers. We had booked 2 weeks in advance for a 3 night stay. We had confirmation of this. After breakfast on our second day she informed us that we had to be out by 11am as the room had been booked by someone else. When we told her that we had booked for 3 nights we were told that it was our problem. This hotel was $65 per...
