We stayed at the Hosteria San Mateo at the end of our visit to Ecuador. At first, we were pleased with the setting and the lovely grounds with llamas, horses, rabbits, chickens and even a donkey. Just this week we had the pleasure of spending two nights in the large cabana at San Mateo. This place is basically a beautiful hacienda turned into a B&B. From the front entrance, to the foyer of the main building to the quaint cabana we had everything made this one of the best value-travel places we stayed while in Ecuador.... more

We were beyond impressed with the San Mateo. Many of the other, better known accomodations were full, so we found this on the Rough Guide or some other "backpacker" type guide. I really enjoyed my stay at this beautiful Bed-N-Breakfast. The staff is very attentive, the food is great, and the landscape is outstanding. I enjoyed eating dinner beside the warm fireplace in the evening when the temperature is chilly. I also took advantage of the tours that you can arrange before you visit. The food is just incredible. Two dishes were the "Carne San Mateo" , and "Carne la Piedra" which were great. The last dish is served on a volcano rock from the Cotopaxi Volcano.
