5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2013 NEW

We recently completed a four day/60 mile mountain hike in the Lake District and the sight of The Royal Oak, our final destination, as we rounded the bend into Rosthwaite was one of the most welcome I have ever had. It is exactly the sort of place you would want to end up at after four long days in the... More

We stayed at the royal oak for one night whilst walking the coast to coast route (St Bees to Robin Hood Bay). It was great! It was a comfy and well run hotel, with both excellent food and the best pint we had in the Lake District! We will definitely return in the future for a longer stay.

Afternoon tea and scones for four, relaxing homely room, chatty and obliging host. Excellent value for the heart of the Lakes. Definitely worth remembering as it tourist tat but just good old hospitality. Happy days...

We stayed at the Royal Oak for one night while we were walking the Cumbria Way (Ulverston to Carlisle). We had an excellent experience at the Royal Oak and loved everything about it. Scones and tea when we arrived, a drying room for wet boots and rainwear (a godsend the day we were there - thank you Susan), excellent home... More

We have just spent four nights at the Royal Oak with our family. We have been going there on and off for years. It is the perfect place for young children to stay. Informal, basic, but good cooking. The staff go out of their way to make children feel welcome. This is a basic, no frills hotel, but is a... More

Honest reviews are always welcome... as of course are fun families with budding fell-walkers keen to climb mountains. As you know we enjoy playing host to all - Grandads and Grand children alike. We look forward to welcoming you all back for another visit to Rosthwaite soon. More

We stayed here for one night while walking the C2C and did not book it ourselves. It's a very old fashioned hotel and I felt I had stepped back in time here. The bar area was very small but the staff were extremely friendly which created a nice relaxed atmosphere. They only have one time for dinner and there is... More

Quirky... yes but hopefully in a positive way. We are exhorted by many of our regulars not to change - our customs & style have become our USP; so while many hotels and inn's have been converted to offer a boutique experience - we pride ourselves in maintaining traditional hospitality. Thanks for your comments we welcome all feed-back. More

A lot of serious walkers stay here and we aren't but we did a beautiful easy going walk around Derwent Water Lake to Keswick. There is a bus opposite hotel that drops off at Londore Falls Hotel and the walk starts over the road. The hotel is small and cosy with Ye Olde bits that make up its charm.

Thanks for your recent review – it’s great to get feed-back. Rosthwaite and Borrowdale really is an excellent location for walks both high and low, for climbers hikers or just gentle strollers. All our rooms are individual – offering a variety of features – our riverside accommodation actually houses our superior rooms so perhaps next time you’d like to saviour... More

Four of us stayed again on a family re-union. It has changed a little over the years, but only for the better: in cleanliness and fresh appearance. The Royal Oak represents the best of trad. hotel values. Friendly approach from a family committed to quality delivery. No boil in a bag infinite choice here. They make it all themselves; and... This small family run hotel gives you exactly what it states in their brochure / website. Our room was large with views to the rear over the Stonethwaite Beck. Four walking friends stayed at the Royal Oak during our C2C walk in mid-April 2013. We had met other C2C- ers prior to arrival and they had all suggested that we would be wowed by our stay at the hotel. We were not disappointed. The hotel is comfortably old-fashioned but immaculately clean, the rooms were a very good size and... More
