We (two couples) stayed here on New Year's Eve for one night. The atmosphere was strange, very quiet, and the bedrooms left a lot to be desired. One was a reasonable size but very cold, and had a tiny bathroom, and the other was a small room with a small double bed (also cold, however, it soon warmed up once... more

Well desperation gets us all & we needed a bed for the night, i wish we hadn't but needs must! In need of a compleate refurb this hotel is damp, musty cold & unwelcoming. the landlady was the rudest woman i have ever met and should strongly think about giving up working with the public. We decided to eat out... more

Comments by other reviewers made us pack warm clothes, but what nonesense people write. The room was very warm with a large double radiator and separate heater in the ensuite. We tried other eating places at first, but when we tried the home cooking here, we didn't waste our time. Coffee served afterwards, by a roaring fire ( and a... more

AWFUL...TERRIBLE....DISGUSTING! Four poster room as advertised - more like a well worn double bed with a limp, sad drape attached. Uncomfortable bed…couldn't wait to leave. Cold, bitter coffee, cold breakfast, very dark depressing breakfast room and bedroom. Waitress and bar man very pleasant and helpful, female proprietor - rude, surly, unwelcoming, unhelpful. Awful bathroom, smelled musty & damp. ONLY STAY... more

We visited the Farmer's Arms for the w/e of 18 - 21 sept 2009 to celebrate my birthday and had a really great time! We were a little apprehensive having read a number of negative reviews on this site but decided to go ahead as we had visited the hotel a few years ago and had a good time then.... more

Went to eat there with family.I have eaten better food in supermarket cafes. I wasn't to impressed with having to fend of flies when I was eating either. The beer was flat and the service was poor. more

This hotel makes Fawlty Towers look like the 7 star Burj Al Arab in Dubai. Upon arrival we were greeted by a member of staff who ,although very friendly struggled with the english language. The bar area of the hotel was although dark very quaint and charming, low wooden beams, log fire etc. We were then shown to our room which was... more

Stayed at the farmers arms over bank holiday weekend. It is a lovely place, well situated for all lake district attractions. Staff were friendly, room was clean and smart. Shower a little dodgy but worked out ok in the end! Breakfast was fine, plenty of choice and we had dinner in on the first night, which was very good. Overall... more

Enjoyed an excellent weekends stay at the Farmers Arms. Stayed in the four poster bedroom and although lighting wasn't ideal I think it added to the charm of the room. Ideal location for South & Central Lake district as Kendal, Winderemere, Ulverston all easily reachable. Had an evening meal on Saturday night (Royal Oak down the road in Spark Bridge... more

No reception, hotel actually closed on our arrival which we were warned about. Arrived at 2.30pm. Bar closed, no drinks available until 6pm on reopening except for tea/coffee available in room. Bed comfortable, linen clean but strong smell of stale tobacco, also smell of cigarette smoke when walking up stairs to bedrooms. Bathroom cold and heating in hotel went off... more
