I booked the George (which looked ok on its website) for a one night stop-over , as the Plough (by far superior) was unfortunately full. The George may have a good restaurant (I personally can't say as I dined at the excellent Walnut Club instead) but if the (second) room I was unfortunate enough to be allocated was anything to... more

A terrible experience. From check in to check out, one of the worst hotels that I have ever stayed in.On arrival, the greeting was poor and unproffessional. No assistance was offered with our luggage. The road noise was completely unacceptable, and after a sleepless night,I was charged to move rooms.I had reserved a table on the night we arrived, but we were informed that because... more

We were VERY disappointed during our stay. We were told that it was advisable to book the restaurant in advance, I wish we hadn't, nor was it necessary, there were only two other couples in the restaurant. The menu was varied but ALL the dishes were so complicated and the service poor. The chef seemed to think that he/she had... more

One night here last week on the strength of its rating in the UK Good Food guide - it gets 4/10 and there are few local alternatives. On balance, the hotel itself is a better bet than the meal.Comfortable bed, excellent shower, nice breakfast, largely french waiting staff. Food approaching London prices but most definitely not London quality. It's part... more

Stayed at The George Hotel for a two night break in January, although the Building was lovely and the lounge cosy our stay wasnt. The room we was put in smelt of paint and kept us both awake all night with the noice of the concrete trucks outside the windows the following day we both had headaches. The complementary bottle of... more

A group of us stayed at the George Hotel last weekend - I used to live in Sheffield and have known of the George for a number so of years but never stayed before. They have been taken over by Best Western but it was a pleasant surprise when I arrived as the hotel was impressive inside and out. All... more

My husband had been here before with friends and said I would love it. I did, Our room was spacious ,modern and extremely clean. We ate in the restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The lounge area is cosy and peaceful and full of character. We will definately return! more

We stayed at The George last week on a precious night away from our two small children. The welcome we received was warm and felt very genuine, and the food was completely superb. We ate in the restaurant and had one of the best meals that we have ever eaten, and then breakfast the following morning was simply the best... more

We booked at The George because the place where our friends were staying didn't have any extra rooms. We didn't know what to expect and had a very nice surprise when we arrived. It seems the Best Western chain is buying up a lot of small, old fashioned places so The George was the best of both worlds: it was... more
