We stayed here for a few nights in Jan 2007 with quite a large group of people - we took up 4 or 5 rooms. Our rooms were tidy, clean and with appropriate amenities. The largest room our group booked had a lovely spacious deck (all 14 of us would eat meals around the table on that deck). Possums would come down to the deck in the evenings to "say hello" (more likely to see if we had any food for them).

We did not use most of the communal areas as we were more interested in spending our time outside of the resort, but we did use the pool and it was clean. The place did have a bit of a run-down feel to it but I didn't notice anything specifically wrong. Certainly did not notice bugs in the rooms. The "little lizards" mentioned by the previous poster are probably geckos, and I challenge you to find a building anywhere in Townsville that does not have geckos. We stayed at Alma Den for one night in November 2007. We were attracted by the price which was better than most on Magnetic Island, and a glossy advert in the island brochure, but very disappointed by the condition of the resort. The resort was deserted and most communal areas (tennis court, games room, laundry, pool area) were dirty, had broken equipment and were in serious need of repair.

Our room was fairly clean with all advertised amenities, but had a range of bugs including visible bed bugs a large cockroach, small lizards behind the curtains and a tree frog living up the toilet bowl!

We were grateful for the transfer from the ferry but Magnetic Island as a whole was deserted, had very few restaurants/amenities and a bus service which was reliable, but slightly overpriced. Alma Bay is a beautiful spot though!

Tip: stay at YHA in Horseshoe Bay, there are some pubs/restaurants there and a good wildlife sanctuary.
