This was a charming and exotic holiday destination which the family as a whole enjoyed thoroughly....the candle-lit several course dinners....the lazy mornings on the large and completely secluded and quiet verandahs, sipping tea and reading a book, the hammocks and the tree-house (which the kids clambered up and down to with great gusto)...the four-poster beds, the clean and yet quaint... more

And if you stay here once, I bet you'll never want to set foot in any of those ugly buildings called 'resorts' that crop in most of our hill stations. Matheran is not easy to get to--but the Verandah in the Forest is well worth a 2 or 3 day excursion from Mumbai. The hotel is a wonderful example of what life must have been like in colonial times. The place is wonderful, serene, quiet, cool and calm. I really find it very nice to stay at all the time of the day and night. Its a 19th centrury bunglow covered with trees from all around.
