Went for a last minute meal out! Great service and food. The fish pie was amazing! Only thing I would say is get a coffee machine so people can have Latte espresso etc! Great value and lovely atmosphere, we will be returning very soon. Well done!

We booked to stay here as a last minute break, what we got was a very disappointing experience. A room with a door only 5ft high with sloping ceilings so not easy to stand up, no wardrobe, although we were offered a cupboard on the landing outside our room. A window with no latch on it which was mouldy and... More

My sons treated my husband and I to a break at The Ship, and as an extra treat they came along too. The weather lived up to the dreadful forecast, although it did stop snowing, but the welcome was very warm, as was our delightfully comfortable room. We wrapped up and braved the elements to take a walk along the... More

We stayed at the Ship for 2 nights. We had booked for 3 but came home early. This could be such a find but they just fall short in several ways. As there is no proper reception area it is difficult to know who to go to for check-ins, problems. On our first morning there was no hot water at... More

We have recently returned from a lovely couple of days break at the Ship courtesy of a Travel Zoo deal which gave us two nights in a 'best' room and £50 credit towards the first night's meal for £149. We couldn't book a 'best' room for the dates we wanted but had a 'good' room instead which apparently was similar... More

Had a lovely 2 day break last week. We booked a discounted package which included a 'best' room. Initially surprised to be in the stable block not the main building, however it was absolutely fine. Quiet, warm, beautifully refurbished and very comfortable with plenty of hot water and a decent bath and shower to return to after a good walk... More

The location is excellent and the rooms were comfortable, although you might be in the stables rather than the main pub. Nevertheless the rooms were clean, tidy and warm. The staff did their job, no more. You felt like 'just another punter'. No-one appeared to be on site at night - is this legal? The food was fair to poor.... More

Just returned from a 2 day break with my wife at the Ship, Dunwich . The rooms and food were excellent and the staff very helpful . We had booked a discounted package for the room but the standard prices looked good value . The food really was excellent . The cheeseboard was a meal in itself . Great place... More

Friendly staff, substantial breakfast and excellent evening meal--lamb for me and pork belly for my wife- and good beer. What more could one ask for. The room was somewhat small but comfortable and clean. A good centre for Southwold and Aldeburgh.

We had been recommended to this inn for a meal but were a bit dissapointed with the food. the food was good but not very inspired. The beer selection was good and the Adnams was in good condition and very drinkable. The staff were very helpful. We did not experience the rooms so offer no view.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Once a haunt of smugglers, The Ship Inn isn't just a great place to eat, drink, relax and get away from it all – we like to think it's also part of a great story. Now a quiet, idyllic village surrounded by nature reserves, heathland and beach, only the romantic ruins of Dunwich monastery remain to hint at the fate of this once thriving medieval port claimed by the waves during a terrible storm. It's said you can still hear the peal of the church bells beneath the waves. While we can't guarantee that, there are certain, more earthly things we're always happy to provide… real ales, real food and a real fire. You will find: a great pub, home-cooked food in our restaurant, a cosy hotel with comfortable, traditionally furnished bedrooms, some with views across the sea or marshes. There is also an enormous garden dotted with fruit trees (including our 300 year old fig tree) and a beach that really is just a couple of minutes walk away. Whether you want to use it as a base to explore this wild and wonderful coastline, enjoy some of the best fish and chips on the Suffolk coast or simply indulge in a pint or two of Adnams, The Ship Inn at Dunwich extends the warmest of welcomes. ... more   less
