this was the first hotel we stayed in when we arrived in the UK. it was wonderful and we couldn't have picked a better place to start our first visit to the UK. we wanted to get the historical aspect of the UK and not as much as the tourist attractions. the hotel was a little overwhelming at first, but... We enjoyed our stay at the Bear and would happily go again, especially if we find another special offer! Our Special offer visit, was at a rate of £19.98 for two which included a huge cooked breakfast! The beds looked new as did the bedding, and the 32 inch Toshiba LCD TV. The towels were decent, two, being huge. The room... More

Pros: The Vivienne Westwood loving barman - he's brilliant The price The sheets/ bed = very comfy The breakfast was delicious The location is great and the parking ample Cons: It's bloody freezing It looks in dire need of a make over - all a bit grubby Grouchy service on arrival No card payments in the bar (unacceptable) More

A lot of the reviews for this hotel are totally unfair. When we arrived yes there was a smell of mouldy carpets at the entrance, which does not give a good first impression.A cheap remnant down here would clear that up. The staff were very friendly and helpful, not a grumpy one in sight. The food was excellent, and plenty of... More

This rates as without doubt the most bizarre weekend stay we've ever experienced. Imagine the hotel Jack Nicholson was looking after in 'The Shining' shabby it up a bit, and you get the idea. The room we were allocated smelt damp, the en-suite left much to be desired, and there was a single camp bed along with the passable double.... More

Good location, but that's about all that's good. We got in to our room which seemed like a storage room with extra tables, cabinets and a single bed in it. We were warned that our room was above the bar, but was not told you hear the music and even conversations from it. Our bed had no headboard and boxed... More

The smell of carpet freshener was an indicator of things to come. Small shabby room, looked as if they started refurbishment in the 1980s and never finished. Returned at 11.30pm. No staff on duty. No heat in the room. No-one to deal with it. Would have complained on check out but no-one around. Horrible experience all around. More

December 2011 Cold Christmas We stopped at this Hotel for 3, days over Christmas 2011 the decor still needs desperately updating. Our rooms were cold & uninviting, there was damp patches on the bathroom ceiling which smelt throughout the room and the hallway. Heating was turned off most of the time (despite our complaints) it was only on from 4pm... More

Thank you for your comments regarding your recent stay at the Bear and I can advise that we have taken action to correct the heating problems in the relevant rooms and to redecorate the bathrooms which had damp patches. Thank you for bringing the matter to our attention as in so doing it gives us the opportunity to put things... More

So the good points. Cheap and a good central location. Evening dinner was OK and there was plenty of choice. Breakfast was excellent. Staff were welcoming and friendly. Yes, as everyone says, the beds were clean and comfortable. However, all of the reports on this site of how much a refurbishment is needed didn’t prepare me for just how dirty... More
