Have used this hotel several times over 30 years, and it has always been a bit quirky! Recent takeover by Arkells has improved it considerably. Room was clean, repainted, comfortable, and overlooked the Market Square - not large, but good for a break. more

Although I agree with most of the other reviews,I would add that it's ideal if you are in need of just a bed for the night and don't want anything extra. I had a single room and was knackered rom hiking throughout the day. the room was dated and small. But still room for a 12" tv and a trouser... more

We were worried about staying here having read all the warnings, but my daughter booked it as it suited our purposes, so we decided to see if it had pulled it's socks up - and it has. The Bear is a tied Inn, obviously making most of its profit from being a popular bar and eating place in the town.... more

This was, for £70 per night the worst hotel i have ever stayed in. The room was tiny (and i really mean tiny although i did see other people in our party with larger rooms), and the fixtures and fittings were pretty much all broken or partly hanging off the wall. This was the first hotel i've stayed in to... more

Several of us were booked into this hotel for a wedding nearby, and from what the website says, it looks relatively nice, however looks can be deceiving. For £70 a night, although in the centre of town, its far too much for what this hotel offered, or rather didnt! There was no real vegetarian option for breakfast, staff didnt know... more

The location of this hotel is ideal should you need to be in the centre of town, and the price (for the area) is competitive. However, the standards of maintenance leave a lot to be desired. Checking into a double room (no singles available) I found myself facing the local police station which made for a noisy night, but someone... more

My boyfriend and I stayed at The Bear during a romantic weekend away and we were really disappointed by the hotel. The double room we were given was small and really dated. The bed was OK but creaky and the TV was so small you have to squint to see it! The decor was foul but to be fair, it... more

This hotel is in dire need of refurbishment. My room was dirty, dated, small, and dark. All fixtures and fittings in the room were either broken, or damaged, with the exception of the TV, which gave a meagre reception. The real problem however is the beds. I had a single, and it was very small and very uncomfortable. I can't... more

Stayed in the Bear hotel in December thinking that for 65 pounds I'd get a relatively decent room. The single room I was allocated by the grumpy receptionist was at the furthest end of the building from reception, two floors up. The bed quite frankly was the most uncomfortable I've ever slept in and made so much noise with the... more

I stayed at the Bear whilst in Wantage on a business Trip. The room I was allocated was a long walk from reception and was in appaling condition, the (single)bed was very uncomfortable and there was only one thin blanket provided, despite the outside temperature being minus 3 degrees. The staff are neither polite nor friendly and it is very... more
