Had a horrible experience. Went with my girlfriend for a lovely weekend, but the experience we got was terrible. The Matress on the double bed was so lumpy, with the springs poking through that we ended up both of us in a single bed. I complained politely the next day and was verbally abused by the owner. After insulting me,... more

I understand from speaking with one of the owners that they have recently taken over the hotel and are working hard to refurbish it. The Black Rock Grill is a wonderful concept, that we first came across in Madeira, I was delighted to find somewhere locally that served food in this way and booked it as a surprise for my... more

We were staying with three other couples at the hotel. The proprietor told me it was a four star hotel. Having checked with Quality in Tourism who award the stars they say the hotel is not registered with them. The certificate on the wall by reception which I was directed to was in fact 2008! Thet boast nine luxury ensuite... more

We dropped in on this hotel as a spur of the moment decision, just booking the room the night before we came. Our malignant TomTom cheerfully decanted us at the wrong spot in Pulborough, and when I rang through to Reception, I was given friendly, accurate directions to get us back on the right road. The room was delightful, spotlessly... more

The hotel is very nice. The room was clean, cute and comfortable. Check in was pleasant. We went to the restaurant for dinner and were surprised to find our food presented to us raw, to be cooked on a hot stone on the table. We waited 25 minutes for the raw food to be presented and my husband's fish was... more

Management response from
ChequersPulborough, Manager

Unfortunatly the customer did not understand our menu. The Black Rock Grill is a unique method of cooking the food and the people in question did not and would not understand this new concept. After verbelly abusing the waitress and then the manager they were ask to leave.

This was the worst hotel experience I have ever had. Our room was tiny, with outdated décor and fittings. The TV did not work properly and the ‘en-suite’ was dingy and cramped. My daughter tried to shower just after we arrived and halfway through, full of soap, found the water reducing to a drip. My request for assistance at the... more

In our opinion this hotel is over priced. We stayed here recently for one night, thank goodness we hadn't booked for longer. The room was small and cramped, the TV was on the wall at such an angle to the bed it was unwatchable. The ensuite was 'tired'. We tried to relax in the lounge with a book and a... more

We have just returned from a short break in Sussex and loved our time spent at the Chequers hotel.Recently purchased by Pat and John (June 2006),they have set about restoring this lovely old hotel ,The lounge's are comfortable and inviting as was the room we stayed in, which was smartly furnished with a very modern en-suite bathroom. The food is... more

I recently stayed in the Chequers Hotel in Pulborough. I would not recommend it to a friend in future. I found the hotel over-priced, even for that smart end of Sussex, and the hotel did not live up to its 3 stars or the publicity it gives itself. The room was smaller than I'd expect for 80, the heating was... more
