The Balch Hotel is a historic landmark building located in the tiny semi remote village of Dufur, Oregon. Our room was well appointed with a fantastic view of Mt. Hood. Dufur is a bit of a teavel to anywhere and too small to have a resaurant so the hotel staff make dinner available with a short menu. We had the... More

While taking to back roads home to Bend we went through Dufer. Saw this cool old hotel and just had to stay the night. Had great romantic stay. We had room 15 on the 3rd floor with an incredible view of Mt. Hood. Bathroom across the hall, but they do have rooms with baths. Home made breakfast was made early... More

If you're wanting to get away, this is your place to retreat, pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Rolling hills and empty streets, and the sound of rain, and wide open skies. The owners, Jeff and Samantha, take great delight in serving their guests, and go way out of their way to make your stay personal and enjoyable. The... More

Dufur is a tiny town, but a convenient place to spend a night or two when exploring that part of Oregon. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and our room was comfortable and overlooked the beautiful stone patio area. There is usually a view of Mt. Hood from the front of the hotel, but unfortunately we could only see... More

A delightful change of pace with many interesting nearby areas to visit....Maryhill Museum with it's world famous Theatre de Mode, Maryhill Winery...great wine and summer concerts, Hood River and its wind surfing and, of course, Dufer with the wonderful Balch hotel and it's very own threshing bee!

I'm a sucker for old historic hotels and the Balch Hotel did not disappoint. I loved the brick and wood construction, high ceilings, burnt umber woodwork, lighting fixtures, antique furniture, side patio with umbrellas over tables, beautiful green lawn, the little water garden in back, the stunning views of Mt. Hood (to the West!), the roomy bathroom, the breakfast room,... More

We recently stayed for the weekend in the suite at the Balch Hotel and had a thoroughly wonderful time. Although the little town of Dufur is somewhat remote, I would highly recommend the Balch Hotel as a home base if you are exploring the area around The Dalles or even as a stopover on the drive from Portland to Eastern... I have to share that....I was instantly fascinated with Eastern Oregon when I drove through the state the first time when I moved to Portland - I feel like I am on another planet honestly. Like the rolling hills of Venus. I am used to large Mountains of Colorado or deciduous forests in New England, but I couldn't deny it,... More

We first learned about the Balch Hotel through Living Social; what a great way to learn about great places around the Pacific Northwest. The Balch Hotel is quaint, comfortable and surrounded by beautiful grounds and country side, has an awesome view of Mt. Hood and is super, super quiet. We were greeted by Samantha (owner) and invited to make ourselves at... More

Nice place to getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. The owners are very friendly and make you feel right at home from the moment you arrive. Rooms are small and simple which is part of the charm of staying at a historic hotel. We didn't experience the noise reported in other reviews but perhaps this was due... More
