The lovely home is close to town so you can easily walk to shops and restaurants. It was fun to watch the chickens and the goats and walk down to the canal. Hubby even caught a fish! We had a nice visit with John at the breakfast table and learned more about the area.

It was a pleasure to come "home" to Belle Pepper's every evening after daily adventures in the stunning Eagle Cap and Hell's Canyon wilderness areas. You almost get the feeling that you are staying at a relative's house - you have your comfortable room and private bath, then you come downstairs to relax in the spacious, bright living area where... John and Pepper make staying with them like being at home; they share from a wonderful supply of books and maps about the area's hiking and birdwatching and other outdoor experiences. When we needed maps for a drive out to Hat Point, they let us hang on to them as well as a hiking map. John cooks excellent food and... More

We felt very much at home here. Breakfasts were good, and coffee even better (but it needs to be available all the time). Our hosts gave us very good information for local points of interest, even calling to see whether the tram was in operation and whether one could reach Hat Point. The setting was charming, and the views from... More

Wife and I stayed here for her birthday. Had an amazing dinner at Caldera's. And a lovely breakfast with John. Stunning place. Great history. Perfect for a night in Joseph. Great end to a long weekend hike to the Matterhorn and Ice Lake. Supports local businesses and has a great green ethic down to seven gen TP! Highly recommended. We... More

The McColgans have the gift of being incredibly gracious hosts while still maintaining an inviting and homey atmosphere - and all this within a 'green and sustainable' travel & hospitality ethic. Breakfasts were fantastic - no small feat given my severe dietary restrictions. John and Pepper gently questioned, hunted up resources, invented recipes, and fed me superbly. My body was... More

We stayed in the largest of the 3 rooms, which had its own bathroom. The room had a seating area with a couch, coffee table, gas fireplace, king-size bed, and a clothes closet with plenty of shelving. It was homey and comfortable, not luxurious, and completely spotless. Bathroom had an oversized tub perfect for soaking; towels were large and of... More

We had wanted to visit Joseph, Oregon, an artists' community, with a specialty in bronze castings, in the heart of the Wallowa Mountains, Oregon's Alps, for some time. As part of a trip to Banff, we finally had the opportunity to visit. On the web we found Belle Pepper's, booked it, and found it to be everything we expected. The... More

I love this home! It was built in the early 1900's and was the mayor's home for the little town of Joseph. The back drop of the big Wallowa mountains is breathtaking. The caretakers, John and Pepper, are wonderful caring people. The decor suits the house and the meals were fabulous! My husband and I have stayed there twice and... More

When a long-planned, first trip to Eastern Oregon finally came about for me and my husband last September, we were ready for a vacation that was really special. Our idea was to blend hiking and outdoor adventure with the finer comforts of Belle Pepper's B&B in Joseph, OR. Nature made sure the outdoor adventure piece was in place. John and... More
