As with other Chapman Group Hotels, the Reception was very difficult to find. Nice friendly landlady. No complaints re size of room/en suite. Very dim lighting, one assumes to cover lack of cleanliness. Broken fittings in bathroom, broken hairdryer. Cobwebs on light fittings. Added extra of active wriggly wildlife in the BED! Discussion with landlady was told impossible to keep... more

I wasn't expecting much when I finally found the hotel (drove around it many times before getting my directions right). I was met in the parking lot by a large dog, who offered me an already-completed crossword puzzle. Amusing, but Trip Advisor's reviews were still vivid in my mind when I made it into the closet laughingly called reception. It's... more

We stayed at the George in late April. We loved it. The history was tremendous. For us Americans, any thing over 100 years old is facinating. The room was great, the food was good, and the service was friendly. more

A Lovely old building in a lovely location, could do with a bit of TLC. The staff were ok, breakfast ok but evening meal very poor. The noise from the pub opposite was horrendous yobs running around till all hours no chance of getting any sleep. WOULD NOT VISIT AGAIN more

The pub does not stock dry white wine. I dare anyone to order the Cottage pie; it was a special recipe of crushed beefburger and instant mashed potato. The seasonal vegetables were chips. The young waitress promised to 'kick the chef's arse' as she provided a cash refund. Off to the local takeaway pizza for us. The reception at The... more

I can see why someone who expects a hotel built out of standard building blocks like a Travelodge, or who really ought to be staying in the Holiday Inn down the road, but doesn't want to pay three times more might have a problem with this hotel. However, those of us prepared to put up with the odd eccentricity, and... more

As you walk through the doors of what from the outside looks like a picturesque old country pub, you are hit by the smell of rancid fat. And it goes down hill from there. In the public areas it looks like nothing has been cleaned since the turn of the last century. My bedroom still smelt of cigarettes after more... more

Hotel service was provided by teenagers with a couple of 20 somethings in charge over night . Food baked to a cinder and cold at the same time! Area: opposite the main night spot, dont expect any sleep if you stay Friday - Sunday. The windows are basic, affording you zero level of sound protection. To put my review into... more

We chose this place blindly after visiting Stonehenge and travelling on to Portsmouth. We were pleasantly surprised by Amesbury and the hotel. The George is old and crooked yet charming and interesting. The original beams were open in our room and that was neat to see. The bathroom needed better cleaning but the room we had was really neat. We... more
