Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This famous coaching inn was the focus of much attention in the 1960s when scenes from ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’ were filmed in the Market Square and the adjacent Corn Exchange. Photos of Terence Stamp, Julie Christie and others once hung behind the counter in the welcoming large bar with its roaring log fire and antique round oak tables. Alas, in mid March the fire was no longer roaring. The photos have gone…..and the lovely old oak tables have been discarded in favour of smaller, ‘modern’ furniture that sits on a hideous red tartan carpet more suited to the reception area of a Scottish shortbread factory. Thankfully, the Market Bar that overlooks the Market Square still retains its rustic charm. My single room was, inevitably, small but still comfortable. Single bed, free standing wardrobe and wall mounted TV. The room also has a kettle with tea bags, coffee sachets and UHT milk cartons. The bathroom was equally cosy but the shower provided instant hotel water. The bedroom window sill was in dire need of maintenance. The white gloss paint was clearly from a bygone era. Highlight of my stay was breakfast. The comprehensive menu choices included smoked salmon and scrambled eggs which, in my case, were perfect. Judy is your hostess at breakfast and she provides the all-important welcoming smile as well as impeccable service. Indeed, all the staff that I encountered combined efficiency with friendliness, including Debbie at the bars in the ballroom and lounge. The hotel has a small car park, free to residents, but remember to give the receptionist your car reg!

Stopped in here for a work lunch a few weeks back. Food was very nice (the fishfinger sandwich was lovely). My colleagues had the fish pie which looked very nice. That was Expensive for such a small portion that came out but worth it for a treat.

Stayed a couple weeks back for a birthday, hotel room was well equipped and bed was comfy. Only issue is I found it very cold, the little heater was a little noisy so wasn’t an option to have over night. There was very little hot water so my shower was cut short. The staff were very friendly so probably would return. Many thanks.

Currently staying here for 2 nights whilst in the area for a family event. Check in reception lady was lovely- super friendly, Room is nice enough although dated and needs a good paint. However that’s not my issue….. Lack of sleep is the problem. Throughout the night we have been woken up several times by the sound of bottles being emptied, people banging things under our room (not outside the hotel as I was abruptly told by reception), 6:30 was then the wake up sound of someone banging about with China cups outside or near our room. I called reception to ask what was under our room to which he said ‘ooo not sure maybe the bar’, so I asked him why things have been banging all night. At one point it sounded like someone was scrubbing a kitchen down! His response was ‘oh that’s not us it’s the nightclub down the road’! No pal! I’m fully aware of when things are under us and outside our room! So we’ve one tired family with a baby woken up several times and no real apology or consideration! We accept that there will always be some noise when staying in a town and a hotel above a pub but a middle of the night kitchen scrub is not needed.

Lovely old hotel with lots of history and charm. Dinner was delicious and the staff were lovely. Breakfast was hot and on hot plates which is good. There was plenty of choice and the coffee was good. The room was lovely, a bit tired looking perhaps, but that seemed to make it feel more cosy and welcoming. Lovely and warm. Check in and out easy, with free parking at the back of the property. We'll definitely be using the hotel in the future as a base for walking in Wiltshire. Thanks for helping out holiday go well.

I have been visiting this fine historic hotel for many years. My last few visits however have been less than happy. The food is still excellent, the chef is obviously talented, please stay! The staff are lovely, welcoming and friendly. My last two visits with former colleagues have been disappointing as the fires were not lit and the place was freezing, 6.30pm and 12.30 pm. I heard other customers ask why there was no fire, the reply” we haven’t had our wood delivery”. I offered the phone number of a local company which was dismissed. This evening I went by at 6 pm again no fire in the busy front bar and 1 degree outside. Not good enough for the main hotel in the town.

Two night stay, we were given a bigger room at no extra cost on the second night. Beds in both rooms were extremely comfy, all staff very helpful and accommodating, special mention to Judy at breakfast, would recommend the bear for excellent value and a unique Devizes experience, it’s a great place with bags of character.

Lovely old hotel with very helpful and friendly staff. Nice bedroom, top quality breakfast and decent pub-type dinner. Log fire in the lounge kept burning all day making it very cozy which was great on account of the bitterly cold and frosty weather

This quirky old hotel right in the centre of Devizes beats the “Premier/Lodge” places hands down. Whilst the decor is a bit faded in places it oozes character and the staff were amazing. Couldnt fault the breakfast either. The free parking at the rear was a welcome bonus. Treat yourself !!!

I cannot fault the staff. They are helpful, kind and knowledgeable. The beds are very comfortable and the whole place has a vibe about it. I’d recommend it to anyone. Right in the centre of everything, the restaurant is a cut above most on the area. Perfect steak to be honest.
