We stayed for one night at the Cape Byron Lodge and were impressed with our double room. It looked quite newly renovated and was clean, with a nice patio door. The bathroom was also well looked after. I can say the opposite is true for the kitchen. It was so disgusting that I couldn't even stand to make toast there. There was a thick coating of black scum in the sink and the counters were covered in crud that had been there for days. The fridge was full of rotting food and there wasn't even a cloth to be found to wipe the work top. Believe me when I say nobody was cleaning the kitchen. We were leaving at 0700 and the kitchen had been closed for cleaning until that time. Let me tell you, it had not been cleaned. It probably gets cleaned once a month, if that. It really turned me off the hostel, which is unfortunate because everything else was pretty good. more
