I'm surprised by some of the slightly negative reviews below. I've been to numerous hostels, and this one was cleaner than the vast majority. I'm not a big fan of plastic covered mattresses, but they guarantee hygenic sleeping conditions free of bed bugs. The building has a lot of classic Charleston character, with a lovely balcony, beautiful murals, and multiple... more

Charleston is a spendy tourist town. We knew that and that was a main reason why we decided to stay at the Not So besides that we like staying at hostels in order to meet others. It was cheap and had both dorm rooms and private rooms. A commons room had two very slow computers but they were free. It... more

After reading some good reviews of the hostel I was very disappointed to find it dirty and poorly equipped in an inconvenient location. The mattresses are covered in plastic (horrible in the heat) my 'fitted' sheet was too small to fit and so thin it had holes in places. The managers are almost never in evidence so it makes obtaining... more

As a global traveler and business consultant, my experience with living in facilities away from home is extensive, to say the least. My feelings and experience with the NoSo Hostel, however, surpasses all the others. This would include even a Starwood or Mandarin Hotel chain. Now, do not let this be confused with the presentation of first rate hotels, as... more

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the Not So Hostel. I was traveling through town on a modest budget and chose to camp in back for 10 dollars + tax /night. There is a complimentary breakfast of coffee, bagels, and various accouterments served every morning. I loved congregating in the kitchen and exchanging stories with the other travelers as we... more

Maybe I'm too critical, when I travel for pleasure I stay in boutique hotels not hostels, but I booked Not So Hostel off of www.hostelworld.com where I found four cool litle hotels all around the USA and the Not So was the worst of of the bunch. The pluses were were a neat, clean room next to a fully stocked... more

Say what you want about the charming though slightly lifeless B&Bs of downtown historical Charleston, for the real Charleston experience there's only one place to go: The Notso Hostel. I stayed there a couple of nights last summer, and upon returning to town this July there was never any doubt in my mind about where to stay. The place is... more

I have never had a good hostel experience in the US; however, the NotSo Hostel is a welcome break from the norm. A charming house set in a residential area of Charleston, the NotSo Hostel is clean, the rooms--while full of bunk beds--are comfortable and they offer a continental breakfast of OJ and bagels, with Gnutella. I also mangaged to... more

My 2 borthers and I we're on a road trip from Detroit. Our destination was Charelston. SC. I knew we would be staying in a hostel so I had a pretty good idea of what to expect. Upon arriving I was instantly put at ease. The staff makes the stay really enjoyable. It truley makes you feel right at home.... more

I would agree that the place is not the cleanest, but also not disgusting by any means. Most of the dirtiness is dust, like on the headboard of the bed or on the baseboards in the bathrooms. For what you pay, I think it's nice that you even get coffee in the AM let alone bagels and english muffins. I'm... more
