Was utterly charmed by the house. the staff, the food, the huge open log fires, the atmosphere - but it just was'nt luxurious enough to justify the price. This is an old royal manor house (with a Norman castle at its core) in the countryside. Our kids slept in the old gatehouse and we slept in the old stables! Arrived with very high expectations! Dinner cost Euro 70 per person. For that we got cold salads, eel, oysters and a large side of stone cold beef with the blood running out of it, some very dry turkey and ham and some cold duck. We had to help ourselves. We didn't make it to Ballymaloe House because of a death in the family two days before we were to arrive. They were very gracious about canceling our reservation without a charge (even though it was within their two-day 100% cancellation charge period). We appreciated that tremendously. more
