We stayed here over May Day weekend and were quite impressed by the refurbishment - up to a point. The dining room and the lounge area have been modernised, but the lounge lacks plants etc., to soften the modernist approach. Entertainment seems to have been curtailed and guests expecting bingo/quizes may be disappointed. They only had entertainment one night during... more

My wife and I have used Shearings Hotels for many years, in fact we made seven visits in 2008. We have been to many of their hotels across England, Wales and Scotland. Our favourite has always been The Imperial at Exmouth. Shearings prices have always been reasonable and the Imperial staff wonderful. We decided to spend The New Year 2008/9... more

I have stayed here many times and I was looking forward to refurbishment of lounge and restaurant. I wasn't keen on the grey walls, grey carpet er and black wall-paper! My biggest disappointment was the condition of the room. New ward-robe, bedside tables, curtains and bedspread. However, the bathroom needed a good clean; the cistern leaked, the toilet was badly... more

Having stayed at the Imperial many times we keep going back for more. The staff are excellent - the best in any hotel we have stayed - they are courteous and helpful and always cheerful. The rooms (worth paying for sea view) are excellent as are the breakfasts. The dining room is very elegant and the lounge bar comfy. more

We have been to a Shearings Hotel twice before, both times to the Torbay Hotel in Torquay. Each time it was a 'Tribute' break so we were not expecting anything similar to that. However as the Imperial Hotel is quite a bit more expensive than the Torbay and it stated there would be entertainment we were rather dissapointed.Friday and Saturday nights they had... more

Having visited an hotel owned by WA-Shearing's before and had not been best please I have to say the Imperial Hotel was very good indeed. Its,location, staff, meals and general facilities were above my expectations and I will certainly visited this hotel again. The company is carrying out refurbishment in the near future so I am really looking forward to an early... more

Stayed for seven nights in July 2008. The room was pleasantly large and well fitted and furnished. The bathroom too was very acceptable. The room was cleaned daily to a good standard and we like the balcony and sea view. Meals were very acceptable but lacking a little choice for someone not into foreign foods. However the waitress was a... more

We booked an Easter break at the last minute, via the Shearings Website. We wanted to go to east devon and this seemed like a good deal. We did not know what to expect from a Shearings hotel and thought we would have to put up with institutional food! Not a bit of it! The hotel is well situated on... more

Just arrived back from all inc self drive Mon - Fri break at this Shearings hotel. Never tried Shearings before but we really enjoyed ourselves. We paid for a sea view room which I would recommend but although we booked our break 6 months earlier we didn't have one of the better rooms with a balcony. I did question this... more

We were looking for a cheap winter break in East Devon and can wholely recommend The Imperial. The position of the hotel is ideal - set back from the seafront only by well maintained gardens and a short walk into the town centre. We paid a supplement for a sea view and this was worth every penny (see attached photo).... more
