We spent a couple of nights here whilst visiting Devon recently. It's recently changed hands and although we didn't visit previously, from the comments of the locals, it seems there have been great improvements. We found the staff welcoming and helpful. The food was excellent - good traditional pub food. I'm not a beer drinker myself but my partner certainly... More

Best roast lunch out in a long time. After reading previous reviews we were a litttle sceptical, however its recently changed hands and the staff friendly and welcoming, nothing too much trouble, will definately be visiting again to sample the rest of the menu.

We visited the Rising Sun to find it was under new managment. The landlord made us welcome, and the staff stopped to chat. I hope they do well in the future as this lovely village deserves a great pub.

When I visited in April 2013 new owner-managers had just taken over, so all the previous reviews don't hold much weight anymore. There were definitely no families of dogs to be seen anywhere. And no bad dog smells. Other reviewers claim it was empty/quiet - yes, but it is on the outskirts of a tiny countryside village so what kind... More

The owners of this establishment seem to consider dog breeding as being more important than customers. On entering the bar/restaurant we were confronted by a dog crate containing puppies and the mother standing by.We might have considered eating here had the whole place not smelt like the back rooms at Crufts. It was bad enough trying to enjoy a pint. Aside from... More

We went there for lunch. Good points: 1. Main courses could be ordered in small, medium or large so no wastage 2. Food arrived pretty quickly 3. Friendly staff Bad points: 1. Food uninspiring 2. very quiet 3. no atmosphere 4. bit chilly

The food was good, the desert was expensive and average. It was cold and the bar had a few customers, no atmosphere. We had a meal there a few years ago and were disappointed with our visit. I think the management has changed. Go to the Bell at Chittlehampton instead.

We arrived at the Rising Sun just as they finished lunchtime shift but they went out of the way to make sure we could still get something to eat. They were such a friendly bunch. Really interested where we came from and the area we were visiting. Nothing was too much trouble. We can't comment on the evening meals but... More

Went here for a meal one evening with friends. Food was good. Not particularly welcoming though. Loo was plastered with mildew. Probably wouldn't bother to go there again although the food was quite decent and good value for money.
