My husband and I stayed for 2 nights at the Richmond House Hotel in Fort Augustus and chose it for its excellent location on the Caledonian canel at the end of Loch Ness and just a couple of hours beautiful drive to the Skye ferry where we were heading. The hotel is located in the centre of Fort Augustus opposite the boat that tours the Loch and next to the canal. It is a few steps away from a small supermarket, fish and chip shop and 2 pubs serving basic food of variable quality. It also has its own bar that serves food. From Fort Augustus you can drive up the more touristy north side of the loch or the wilder and far nicer south side. The Richmond itself was rather scruffy inside, was in need of some decoration and felt slightly grubby. The mattress in our room was a bit thin and the ensuite bathroom was the smallest I had ever seen. When you sat on the loo your knees were practically touching the shower door!
