We had an enjoyable two night stay at this Hotel and used as a base to visit both Islay and Jura.
We had a room overlooking the garden and bay. We had a few problems to begin with but these were quickly resolved for us.
The dinner was good with homemade spinach, tomato & pepper pasta, followed by salmon fishcakes with sweet chilli relish & salad and an excellent sticky toffee pudding. The wine, The Citrus Tree from Australia was food and the draft Guinness and the wee tot of Bunnahablain whiskey from the Hotels wonderful range of malts was lovely.
The breakfast the following morning did not have a menu but cereal boxes & milk. However the chef fetched us some yoghurt & fruit and then a good cooked breakfast and then toast and some marmalade jam that another table had fetched from the Co-op supermarket in the village (stays open until 10pm)
We travelled 20minutes to Pork Askaig to catch the ferry to Feolin on Jura, costing £25.00 for the car and two adults. The scenery on the single track roads is great. We stopped on the way back at Antlers Café at Craighouse which was a welcome break and good food and service.
The trip to Portnahaven is also well worth the journey and we stopped and chatted to local residents and saw seals basking in the harbour and a variety of sea birds. A walk on the beach at Port Charlotte is also worth the stop.
For dinner we had the beer battered cod with chips & peas, and I had the lamb, mint and coriander korma with basmati rice and poppadum’s.
A very good stay with lovely drives around Islay & Jura
Regards Gary Saunders
Room 11 was quite basic but ok for a 3 star hotel with lovely view over the bay and veranda below.
Unfortunately, the youth of Bowmore congregate in the bar and are exceedingly noisy and loud with music playing until 12am on the Friday and 1am on Saturday. Whilst this is understandable for the locals it isn't much fun for guests who were paying £210 per night!
When raised with the Manager we were told that the place was a bar first and a hotel second - draw your own conclusions!
Sunday night was quiet and peaceful
I have dined here recently and some lovely meals.
I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant which is very friendly and tastefully decorated in woods.
My favourite dish was probably the lamb ....but scampi, and chicken dishes were also excellent.Although perhaps the lamb could have been cooked a bit more for my liking.
Well done all.
By the way, I NEVER give 5 star ratings!
